Hey there... I 39 years old and I totally new to the hobby.
I went to the Bowling Center and told the drilling Guy that I want to start Bowling and want to learn the Hook.
He gave me advice to get a "Roto Grip - Hustle" with 14 LBS.
Never got asked about a layout or anything... he drilled the ball somehow. Don´t know how.
After selling the stuff to me, he had no time for weeks to teach me so I went online and watch a few of these YouTube videos on how to hook a bowling ball. I trained this for weeks but never got the hang of it... do net get the feeling on how to hook. It happens eventually but I cannot get the feeling.
So I bothered the seller a lot to get 30 Minutes with him... and the technique he showed me is totally different from what the Pros say on YouTube.
On YouTube you hear all the time... "get the hand behind the ball"... not have the hand sideways... for better ball control. But than the driller, seller, coach... call him what ever you want... he showed me exactly that... "hold your hand beside the ball" to get revelations.
I tried it and yes... I easily get revelations now... So now I am totally confused... I do not want to learn a technique that is "old" or not good... So I would better learn the correct method with the hand behind the ball. But may it be, that my drilling layout is not correct to get revs when I am behind the ball? Does it matter how the layout is drilled?
I have no other person that that guy for teaching me... I am getting more and more the feeling that he is not the best guy to coach me how to bowl...
What would you guys say? How hard is it to get the ball spinning with the hand behind the ball? I struggle for 10 weeks now with 1-2 training sessions a week. So I have about 20 hours of practice and cannot get any feeling of it. It is just luck on how the Ball spins or not.
Do I have to be more patient and train harder?
Sorry for my bad English, I am from Germany.
Best regards
Chris

Chris, I commend your knowledge of the English language. You communicated effectively.
Without getting into the physics of what makes a ball hook, suffice it to say that this action is a matter of degrees. Please be aware that there is a lot of good content on this forums WIKI.
There you will see articles on the physics and techniques of the game and also see sources for information.
This link is to Richard Schockley's Virtual Bowling Academy.
It is a set of short instructional videos. There are a few on the release. There are also drills.

This link is to a segment of the Wiki that deals with ball motion. I think you will find it very helpful

I hope my response inspires others to contribute. There are far better minds than mine who view this forum.
Note the forum also has a search feature which can be helpful.
Again, I envy your command of a language that is not your mother tongue.
Have patience with yourself and proceed at your own comfortable pace.
Be kind to yourself, the sport is not as easy as it may appear to the casual observer!

Understanding your ball roll. Knowing Tilt, Rotation, Speed and RPM and how to see it.
Find your PAP, Positive axis point, Practice with a piece of tape on your ball.
This will help you visualize.
Starting from scratch I suggest learning to roll the ball with About 17* Tilt 40* Rotation and Matched Speed to Revs
Release specs in this area will produce a really good hook.
Check out the Wiki that John linked, Lots of good information there.
Eric Hartwell
Right Handed
PAP 4.75" up 1/2"
45* rotation
12* tilt
330 rev rate
16 mph off hand

Re: Newbie not able to Hook... is my Ball drilling wrong?
Hey everyone, thanks for all the responses!
And thanks for the encouragement . Today, I was at the lanes, and they were bone-dry. I couldn’t handle it at all… I played a 40 game while total beginners next to me were hitting 80 or so…
So yeah, it’s not just technically tough but also mentally sometimes... it was hard to endure the smug looks when I kept throwing gutter balls haha...
I’ll keep trying… patience is probably the key word here. I have extremely high standards for myself and sometimes push a bit too hard and get too impatient. Good to hear that it’s tough in the beginning… I’ll stick with it!

Re: Newbie not able to Hook... is my Ball drilling wrong?
Hey guys,
today it happend... I got the first feeling on how to control my spin. Or lets say a glimpse on what is possible.
So it finally did not happen randomly but I was able to control on how intense the hook should be (first feeling... of course not fully control it )
The video material you linked was a good help! But the documents are killer!
The final thing I needed was to understand how the ball spins -> find my PAP or at least unterstand what it is.
As I like to approach things on a technical way, this was very essential for me to understand what I need to do to make the ball spin.
This in combination with the videos was the final thing I needed.
For all others out there... your ball is fine ... continue the drills, continue practicing on the lane and it will make click somehow.
I was so happy today... thank you so much for your support!
