Last year I got very sick (months to recover) and now I have lost significate speed while bowling. I can only seems to keep the ball in the pocket with my Pitch Black and when I switch to some type of reactive, it hooks to much. My least aggressive reactive is the Hustle RAP. Currently throwing 15LBS. I obviously can have carry issues with the Pitch Black but can't seem to control anything else. I am really not sure how to approach an improvement like maybe go to a lighter ball? It is strange as most everything else other than the Pitch Black seems to hook at the arrows but I can control the PB?
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Depending on how seriously you take your game.
One reason to keep a video archive of a bowler is to compare an contrast the Then and Now.
Having lost speed your rev to speed ratio has obviously changed.
The way the balls are laid out can certainly be a factor.
The lanes and conditioning is a factor. Do other bowlers see a big difference in oiling etc?
Given your struggles, it might be a good idea to consult a coach and your PSO.
I would also pursue conditioning to regain strength and speed, your legs are very important.
If you can post your metrics as recommended for layouts, perhaps Eric can weigh in with suggestions. He is very knowledgeable about equipment and layouts.
Also what average did you maintain before your illness?
What is your medical professionals prognosis and recommendation?
I've been a way from bowling for quite a while.
My former team mates might say I was never in it.
I bid you good luck and patience.

Re: Left handed struggles
Thanks John - I averaged 195 - 200 struggled with the 7 pin, now I am much better with spares but struggle with ball reaction) and have always seemed to struggle when the lanes hooked a lot. That said, all the PSO's that have laid out balls for me always go pin over the middle finger. I was going to have a ball drilled pin down to see what kind of roll I got. I have a high axis rotation. Conditioning would help but I also have a bad right knee (left-handed bowler ugh), I am working on gaining strength.
I have never had an issue with getting the ball to hook (seems like I am always trying to get it to lay down). Moving right seems to get the ball to hook early unless I just try as hard as I can to throw it through the pattern and then it doesn't recover.
I have not had any luck in finding a coach in the area and my PSO doesn't really seem interested in helping.
I just find it odd that I am able to control my pitch black so well but as soon as I go to something reactive, it hooks like crazy.

Re: Left handed struggles
The Pitch Black is kind of the ultimate control ball.
It is a Low Differential Urethane ball. Technology from 30+ years ago.
Not that it doesn't have a place in an arsenal today.
I don't think an arsenal is complete with out 1 or 2 Urethanes in the mix. Just saying.
Sounds to me like you haven't had a good layout yet.
Except for maybe the Pitch Black.

Accurate release info is really needed.
Specifically Tilt, Rotation, Speed, Revs and PAP
I have some really good ideas for you but need more info.

Re: Left handed struggles
Thanks - I did see the items list at the top and I will work on getting those. I will post those number when I get them. All of my PSOs have always ordered very aggressive new balls. When I finally got my current PSO to order me a Hustle RAP he drilled with the pin under the middle finger and again seems to over hook until I get deep enough to get it through the fronts and craps out on the back.
Thanks again for the reply and help.
