Thumb Tape won't stay on thumb

Post by SRB442 »

Hi, I have been using the vise blue thumb tape on the back side of my thumb for 5 years with no problem. I went to practice 4 games and did rip the skin under the tape and the thumb tape came almost off (it still sticks to the thumb nail). Since that happened it won't stick to my skin as I have to keep patting it down. I tried another piece from a friend and it did the same thing. It's been a couple of weeks and is still happening and where I tore the skin it is healing up nice. I just can't figure it out and is effecting my bowing release. Has anyone got any ideas on why? Thanks Steve

Just thinking of some variables and there affect on you.
Off the top of my head.
Taken one at a time or in combinations.

Both hands or just your dominant hand?
Try house ball for other hand test.
Diet, Weather, Medication, Supplements, Soap, Skin lotions, changes in your skin drier, oilier, changes in other chemicals your hands are exposed to.

Discuss with your PSO see if they will let you sample different brands, or if they have ideas or feedback from other customers.

Write to manufacturer about your problem, check website for faqs, communication.

Best wishes for a solution.
May all beings everywhere be happy and free,
and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life
contribute in some way to that happiness
and to that freedom for all.

Thank you very much for the reply. Nothing has changed in anything I am doing. I have used this tape for 5 years without this happening and the only thing I did was practice 4 games and that was when i ripped the back of my thumb and the tape tape came loose at that time. I tis getting better but still comes loose other that sticking to my nail. THe place where I ripped my thumb is healing nicely and may once totally healed it will bb better. Steve

Disclaimer...
I am not a doctor. Just an athlete that has had plenty of skin injuries.

Your body is producing moisture in the area that is trying to heal.
Each time you tape your thumb and bowl the healing process is being interrupted or even set back.
Scar tissue is likely to form.

Is your thumb that tight that the needed slip to get out of it is dependent on the tape?
Or, are you knuckling the thumb to hold on to the ball and need the tape to keep from abrading your thumb?

If the latter I would re-evaluate your thumb hole and grip.
This would include span, pitch, lateral, size, shape round or oval and angle of the oval.

Thank You for the reply. That makes perfect sense as it happened that one day of practice. It is almost healed now and seems to be getting better as far as the tape coming off. I use the tape for protection and feel. Bowling tonight so will see if is better. Steve

I have the same issue because i sweat easily. Tried every tape, and 2 anti-sweat/moisture sprays (one Storm, the other i can't recall). Nothing worked.

What helps a bit is to shave any hair you have on the back of your thumb, because even with tiny hair there the tape doesn't stick as well.

Also try some tapes that are not specifically for bowling, like the elastic ones they put for comfort or on muscles.

Thank You for the advise. I am pretty sure once this tear heals up this will stop. It was bad last Thursday as it ripped open again so was not a fun night as I can't do what I normally do to the ball. It looks pretty good today and am thinking of using a patch with new skin then putting a piece of tape over it. It's frustrating as this has never happened before and have been using the tape the last 4-5 years without a problem. Only a few weeks left of the season then and let heal right up. Steve

I was going to mention using newskin. I don't know what took me so long.
Perhaps the fact I have not bowled in 20 years or so
I had my share of skin problems, mostly due to my own poor technique.

There are a number of home remedies for healing and prevention.
Be skeptical and careful with them.

The old adage an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure applies.

Look up "Pickle brine Ryan".

Good luck!
May all beings everywhere be happy and free,
and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life
contribute in some way to that happiness
and to that freedom for all.

I hear ya on taking time off as I took a 12-13 year break before coming back. I use to buy the new skin by the case back then. I thought I had everything under control till I ripped my thumb. I have been putting polysporin on it to aid in healing and it looks ok right now. Will find out this coming Tuesday. Steve

Might be a bad batch of tape or old.. I recently got some hada patch that had been sitting in a pro shop for a long time . Does not stick like any of the other times I have purchased it.

I did try different tape with same results at the time. I think Eric hit the problem as the injury was causing moisture and then tape coming loose. It is healing nice and have been putting new skin over it then the blue vice tape and has been good. I am throwing the ball a lot better now at the end of the season. Thanks for the suggestion. Steve

I sweat a lot when I bowl and had the same issue with tape on my thumb, I use the green turbo tape.

Then someone put me onto the blue VISE tape, the shiny one, and this adheres much better, so it goes on first and then turbo thumb tape over the top.

My daughter uses the storm red tape, her skin is moist and sticky. She uses gamers grip antiperspirant cream, often uses super glue to retouch the edges of the tape when it starts to come off, old school kitty litter puff ball and hand conditioner. Super glue may sound extreme but it works… hey, whatever it takes.

How has the tape been? For years I coated the back and sides of my thumb with super glue because new skin would only stay on for a couple frames. Since tape has come out, I have tried a few with no luck. A couple of years ago someone gave me a piece of Genesis tape to try. At the end of the night I had to peel it off. I have been using it ever since.

I have not thrown a ball since end of April. Thumb looks perfect now and hope the tape will stay on since my thumb is all healed. Will find out in a couple of weeks just before the season starts. Thanks for asking. Steve
