Fixing early timing

Post by Linknblue »

I have a case of early timing. I'm 5 steps with pushaway on 2nd step. I''m constantly inside my target and off balance quite a bit. I also tend to hit my leg on the downswing....ball dropping and hitting leg before it gets to the backswing.....coming forward. The early timing is killing me. I've moved up about a foot to shorten my approach thinking it'll be faster (quicker steps)...didn't work. I've tried holding the ball higher to lengthen swing....didn't work. Tried going back to 4 steps...didn't work. Got any suggestions on fixes for this? I am definitely a 4 step approach...not a 4 step that's really and 3 step. :?

Linknblue, catchy name.

Many coaches will assess how well the bowler's equipment suits their hand, appropriate weight, proper use of tape.

The link below deals with video capture for analysis.
The procedure was written by Jim Merrell, who for many years served as our Bowling Doctor. We have several experienced instructors that are members.

Jim's preference was 1 video from back, 1 from side.
Some coaches like more, for example, if you watch Mark Baker's video, he likes to video 10 deliveries. I surmise that is to check for for consistency.
Mark also looks at footwork first.
You also might want to track if this happens more with certain lines of play.

The video will provide evidence and eliminate guesswork.

A bowling approach is not unlike an algebraic equation, with the possibility of positive and negative variables, for example, 2 negatives can yield a poise result.
Tom Kouros made a point of that possibility. You may have seen some very good bowler's that were not "model" bowler's, yet they succeed despite things that look like flaws.
While one can enumerate what contributes to early or late, without seeing, it's a crapshoot.

Caveat, many bowlers do not really know what they look like as they bowl.
Once your game is were you like it, start a video archive.
If your game slips, compare your "good self" with your "slump" self.
That's done in many sports.

It would not hurt you to view the Kegel videos and others on the wiki.
