Looking to Redo My Ball Arsenal

Post by Fishinfiend »

I am looking to redo my bowling ball arsenal. I am getting into doing more scratch tournaments on challenge and sport shots. I also do the USBC Open Championship. But it will still have to work with house shots, even though I don't think this should matter.

I am looking at getting new and/or redrilling my balls to get a 6 ball arsenal. One of the 6 balls will my spare ball.

I have some thoughts on the balls to make up my new arsenal.

I don't care about what brand ball I throw. I currently have 3 Brunswick, 2 Motiv and 1 Radical ball in my bag.

Balls of choice can be pretty subjective. I bowl quite a bit of over 50 stuff on challenge patterns to pba50 patterns. I like to run with a make up of this in a 6 ball arsenal...

1 big cover solid ball. Typically an Asym..
1 big cover pearl/hybrid ball. again Typically an Asym
2 medium strength control balls. usually these are symetric balls. these can be solid / hybrid or pearl.
1 burn / they starting to hook way to much ball.
1 plastic ball for spares.. Tho some will use a urethane ball to cover this also.

This is my current tournament bag:
PAP for these Measurements is 4 7/8 by 1/2 up

Motiv Jackal Legacy (Asym Solid)
45 x 4 7/8 x 35
Brunswick True Nirvana (Asym Pearl)
58 x 4 5/8 x 35
Radical Sizzle (Sym Solid)
100 x 3 3/16 x 42
Brunswick Rhino (My Spare/ Dry Lane Ball)
70 x 5 3/8 x 40
Brunswick Melee Jab (Sym Pearl) (Original Release)
78 x 3 3/8 x 27
Motiv Fatal Venom (Sym Pearl)
40 x 4 x 30

I have a White Dot for a spare ball on dry lanes, but I prefer my Rhino because it will drive thrthe pins instead of bouncing off of them.

We need to know if you are speed dominant, matched or rev dominant. Knowing your axis tilt will also be very helpful.

Being able to roll urethane at your spares will allow you 5 reactives in your 6 ball arsenal. Otherwise then a purple hammer and your polyester will allow you 4 reactives.

Knowing your speed, revs and tilt will be necessary to recommend a good arsenal (and layouts) for you, otherwise we are just guessing. Anyone who recommends an arsenal without having at least an idea of your release specs is not properly doing their job.

I like ICURNVS general suggestions.

The way I see it is and was taught to me by Del Warren is:

Ball 1 a very predictable low RG med diff solid cover symm (IQ Tour is great but may be a stronger ball if you are more on the speed dominant side). This is you benchmark ball.

Ball 2 a strong ball, most likely a solid low RG, mid Int Diff Asymm. Your snow tires when you need to move inside from ball 1 or when ball 1 isn’t hooking. This is your big ball. 900 Reality is a great example (may not need to be that strong if you are rev dominant and/or slow speed)

Ball 3 pearl or hybrid symm to move more inside, something that is clean and comes back, at this transition your breakpoint will most likely start getting closer to the pocket (of course this is generally speaking, depends on lane and oil conditions) a Hy-road is a good example but again this can vary. Could even be another asymm with a long cover and adequate layout if you are speed dominant and/or high tilt, there are a few ways to achieve the ball motion needed.

Ball 4 Burn ball, this is a ball for when you need to keep it in front of you and control the pocket in later games. This will be your “weak ball” for lack of better words. A Tundra Fire or Hustle Wine works very well to fill this spot. For speed dominant players this ball may need to be something a bit stronger like a Hyped pearl.

Urethane for sport is a must and a Purple hammer is king.

Hope this helps

Plus I think I am going to switch the new/redrilled balls to the JoPo grip from Turbo Switch grips because it seems like it doesnt take long before the thumb doesn't feel tight.

What information would you guys like me to provide? I have my release measurements from a couple of years ago, but I will be getting all new measurements before I get my new balls. I have the drill angles from my current balls. And I have some thoughts on the balls to make up my new arsenal.

Sorry about the slow response and thanks for the responses so far. I just got myself measured and here are the results:

PAP 5 1/2 x 1/8 up

Speed 15mph
(Screen will read 12mph and occasionally I will throw as fast as 13mph (sometimes I rush))

RPMs 260

Tilt approx. 10

Rotation approx. 70

Will be for Synthetic Lanes and I think it will be geared towards Sport Shots.

Thanks Eric,

I have question, why you didn't recommend a pin down drilling?

Working from your higher ratio Benchmark it wasn't i the numbers.

Thinking about it I don't often recommend a Pin Down for a low tilt bowler because of the chance of it flaring over the fingers.

Thank you. I was just curious and I am trying to learn more about the correct ways to drill balls for myself.

Eric, the 65 x 3 x 35 layout actually looks like a cross between pin beside and pin down.

The picture has what the drillings would approximately look like. Granted I used a protractor and a flexible ruler to layout the ball.

What ball or actually what year did that drill sheet come from?

Never been a fan of any drill sheet that comes with the ball.

I like my drill sheets
Here is 65-3-35 ...
Fishinfiend.JPG
Here is your 65-3-55 Control layout.
Fishinfiend 65-3-55.JPG
Control layouts in many cases are Pin Down drillings.
This could be described as pin down as the Pin is below the fingers.

My description of Pin down is Below the line from the PAP through the Ring finger.
