Looking for ball and layout suggestions

Post by CuriousBowler »

I'm in the process of looking to buy a new ball. My eye has been on the Motiv Blue Coral Venom. As I love the color scheme of this ball. However I don't know if it will fit what I'm looking for in terms of ball motion.

I will mainly use this ball on a THS, which mostly the outside part of the lane plays dry, and wet/dry is an issue at times. I want a ball I can play more straight with that's smooth, helping blend things out. However the issue is.. I consider myself rev dominant with slower ball speed. I don't have an issue getting balls to hook. Overall I'm looking for ball suggestions, and layout help as well.

My bowling stats

Right handed no thumb bowler
Throw 14lb balls
PAP 5 7/8 over by 1 down
Ball speed averages around 15mph downlane
Rev rate 350-400
Tilt less than 10

Anyways I hope that's enough info for some suggestions. If not, let me know. I will try to add more info if needed.

There is a lot I like about your ball choice.

Firstly you shopped by color/shelf appeal.
It is a nice looking ball.
I'd be thinking go with orange inserts to stay with the balls color scheme.

The ball description by Motiv calls it a Benchmark type ball for you.
"Rev Dominant Bowlers: For rev dominant bowlers the Blue Coral Venom™ is a perfect benchmark ball. Due to lower speed or higher rev rates, players of this classification often need to “ball down” from what balanced or speed dominant bowlers would use. While the Blue Coral Venom™ is classified as a medium-dry oil ball, for those who are rev dominant it is a benchmark that offers moderately clean and controllable ball motion."

The Core...
It is not a High Differential.
Definitely what I would call Medium Differential.

The Intermediate Differential is on the lower side of Medium.

http://wiki.bowlingchat.net/wiki/images ... Nov_10.pdf

Int Diff/Total Diff= Differential Ratio

Motiv Blue Coral Venom: .012/.033 = .3636
So it is a Medium flare ball But it is More Asymmetric

Compared to The new Jackal: .014 / .049 = .2857
A Higher flaring ball with Less overall Asymmetry

Is your PAP taken from a Non-Flaring ball?

Do you ever roll the ball over your Middle finger?

What kind of rotation do you put on the ball?

PAP 4.75" up 1/2"

12* tilt

PAP has always been taken from one of my balls with a core. Only have one plastic ball, which has a thumb hole for spares. Never used it. I have tried coming up the back more, and a little side rotation. Take an average between two.

Normally oil rings stay about half an inch away from middle finger hole. Not to say there isn't times it happens. It's just rare.

Normally I try to stay up the back of the ball, and I do change how I spread my fingers at times. But I rarely focus trying to turn my hand much. I won't lie my hand does get around it at times. When it does normally I'm focusing too much with getting ball off my hand. Not allowing my cradle swing to stay steady. Overall if I was to guess my axis rotation is middle of road 40 or so range.

Well after a not so good night of bowling league last night. Frustrated with myself, and how I couldn't get comfortable with the lanes. I'm actually buying two balls now 😂 already got a Rhino ordered. Something I can use to play straighter with when lanes are dry. Which got me last night. I got trapped, and our original lanes broke down in practice. Got moved to another pair. So I made moves vs switching balls. Didn't work out well. I didn't have a ball down to go to either.

I'm very likely ordering the Blue Coral Venom today(here shortly) as well. I will just need help with suggested layout for both.

Drill the Coral Blue Venom 60-3-60.
I like the Factory 4000 grit as a good starting point for what you are looking for.

As far as the Rhino...
The core is weak enough and with the lack of a Thumb hole you are not going to get any help from the core.
Other than a little flare if wanted.
I would go for a low flare set up xx-2-60 and stick with a lower rotation release to combat those dry lanes.
