Need help!

Post by bluesfan4life1955 »

I throw a 16 lb ball, I throw around 17.75 to 18.50 mph which is super fast. How am I able to slow myself down to let the ball work? P.s I'm also 7 foot tall with a big back and forward swing. TIA

Love the name!

A few thoughts and questions just to get the ball rolling.
Hopefully better minds than mine will contribute and help you on "your road to find out" :)

Is your speed measured at release or near the pins?
Your ball speed is NOT Super Fast. Many bowlers would love to have your speed.

This chart (from the BTM wiki) can help determine if you are speed dominant, rev dominant, or matched.

The link below has some determinant factors that affect ball motion

My guess is that you probably would benefit by improving elements of your release.

BTW, the tallest PBA member I remember is Steve Cook, about 6'7"

In my opinion, working with a coach one on one is the best road to improvement.
A coach can assess what to change and how to change it, what to leave alone

There is an ancient story about 6 blind men and the elephant.
The message of that story is a good analogy as to why, coaching sight unseen is not efficient if good at all. Granted there are various physical motions that can be tweaked, but the good coaches know what ingredients make the optimum recipe for a specific bowler.

Here is an article ,"Speed Control Part 1......How to throw the ball slower" by coach Ron Clifton on ways to reduce ball speed.

Many of today's coaches make ample use of video.
Here is a short article (on forum wiki) written by Jim Merrell, a well respected coach on how he prefers videos be made.

Mark Baker explains how to video capture within his " System "

BTW the wiki has a lot learning resources, from the home page, choose the Research path.

Back in the days of hard copy, I read these cover to cover. I think I learned a lot from those pages from some very talented instructors.
Remembering the founder and instructor Bob Summerville, gone way too soon.
