Homemade jig chatters

Post by curtie94 »

Hey guys I made my own jig mainly because I couldn't find a used jig. I used a cheap xy table from amazon and secured a ball cut to the table. I used a brake rotor on the top and 2 threaded rods with nuts to hold down pressure on the ball to the table. It seems to hold the ball snug, I cannot move the ball by hand.

Now when drilling with small drill bits it works flawlessly. Drilling the fingers with the 31/32" bit it does not chatter at all.

When I transition to the 1 1/2" for the thumb slug the bit chatters and doesn't drill well. It even seems to walk a bit and oval the hole. The plug cutter is even worse, when using the plug cutter it chatters so bad sometimes it will actually cause the bit to bind the drill.

I have the press set as slow as it can go since I figured it would cut the smoothest. The drill is set to 250rpm. Should I try a faster speed? I did try 500rpm and it didn't seem to help.

Would I be better off using 1 1/4" slugs?

Any advice would be appreciated.

update. I upped the drill speed to 500rpm and made sure the jig was secured. The drill bits work good, but I still cant get the plug cutter to work well. So I am going to revert to a router, at least I will be able to drill my own equipment
