Bowler's Pre-Shot and Post Shot Routines
Many would agree that having a good Pre-Shot routine is very important to bowling success.
Some may feel that way about an after the shot routine such as always posting the shot as you observe the ball, it's path through the pins into the pit.
What are your thoughts and habits?

If you do not have a routine consideration is in order ...
Cheers.

Re: Bowler's Pre-Shot and Post Shot Routines
I am not sure what you mean by Post shot? Once the game is over the game is over there aren't any post shots? Now a routine could be like your celebration routine like they do in NFL football in the endzone Now if someone has a good celebration routine I would like to hear it.
My preshot routine is to make sure that there isn't any oil on the ball. I try to use the shammy leather thing in the track area to get any of that off if there is any. I use the towel alot for my hands and I use the blower thing all the time. Then look line up at the dots with my left foot. Then make sure right foot is slightly behind it. Then start looking at the arrows making sure I don't take my eye off the mark and then throw it.
Post Shot would be:
I watch where the ball hits the lane when it goes out of my hands and at the arrows. Then I watch the balls motion and where it starts to hook at. Then I try to watch where the ball exit the pin deck. Then if I throw the ball wrong I shake my head even if I struck so I let people know that this wasn't correct at all. If the ball I was throwing was a spare ball and the ball return thing is full then I would wait for the ball to come back and then put it on the other rack of balls.

Re: Bowler's Pre-Shot and Post Shot Routines
Pre-Shot Routine: 1) Check the rack for off-spot pins and re-rack as necessary. 2) Pick up the ball and wipe with microfibre towel. 3) Find spot on the approach. 4) Trace intended line from target through breakpoint, or from breakpoint back to spot at the arrows. 5) Think swing shot of the day. 6) Go!
Post-Shot Routine: 1) Post shot at the line as you, 2) Watch how the ball exits the pin deck. 3) Decide on adjustments for the next frame on that lane based on input from previous shot.

Never done a rerack what is the USBC rule in league for reracks?
Re: Bowler's Pre-Shot and Post Shot Routines
There is no rule regarding reracks, Unless the league or tournament adds it to their rules.krava wrote:Never done a rerack what is the USBC rule in league for reracks?

I don't want to do a rerack and someone say "what the hell are you doing?" you just got a 0 for that

Re: Bowler's Pre-Shot and Post Shot Routines
No rule regarding re-racks means you can re-rack as often as you like in USBC competition. The PBA, on the other hand, limits re-racks to two per game. If you re-rack and anyone gives you grief, refer them to the USBC Rule Book.

Re: Bowler's Pre-Shot and Post Shot Routines
Some good info up there, green sticky worthy ...
Glad someone " Rob", "picked" up on the meaning and importance of the Post Shot routine.
Kind of analogous to the "learning from history" axiom.
If you search the forum for references on this forum to "posting the shot" which is a term denoting maintaining your finishing "solid and in balance" position at the line, Shockley has a video on it.
It's like sticking the landing for a gymnast.
That position combined with key observation is cornerstone and culmination of the bowling shot making process. If you can combine that with what Dr Hinitz referred to as "observation without judgement" it will pay dividends. That's a discipline that takes work and is not easy since we all have egos and expectations. But if you pat yourself or kick yourself too much, your emotions can hurt performance, or at least I believe so.
Rofl Gauged was a coach that taught envisioning and planning for execution, the extension of that is what you look like at the end of the physical execution.
Remembering that the THINKING part of the brain is a passenger during physical execution, the driver is your trained, practiced, and finely honed MOTOR skills.
Analogy, you do not think about tieing your shoes.
Cheers and thanks to all who have added their valuable input.

Bowl1820, have you ever updated the wiki?
You might consider adding your input and Rob's in the coaching segment.
Nice composite of references and suggestions.
The first night I used Earl Anthony's mantra I shot my first honor score, it might have been a 300 if I used it on the 12th ball instead of my bone head self comment "now don't tug it".
Cheers!

I think that your composite of information would be a nice addition to this forums website.
This concept is something all bowlers should be exposed to.

Re: Bowler's Pre-Shot and Post Shot Routines
I didn't put everything in my routine some things are left unsaid. I also see if I need to adjust after a shot etc. One big thing I have is that when I get up to the bowling lane to bowl my damn underwear rides up my butt and I have to use my other hand grab the corner of it and pull it down (wear gym shorts to bowl) and hope no one notices. Try to bowl with your underwear (briefs) riding up high on you and your uncomfortable. That doesn't really relate to the bowling part of it though.

Re: Bowler's Pre-Shot and Post Shot Routines
I think you're being funny, and I appreciate the honesty and humor - but it does relate to bowling, because it's a distraction when you stand up to bowl. You're thinking "Damn wedgie! Did anybody see me adjust?" rather than getting into a focused state where you are ready to perform. We've all been there!krava wrote:Try to bowl with your underwear (briefs) riding up high on you and your uncomfortable. That doesn't really relate to the bowling part of it though.
The pre-shot routine can reinforce positive, or negative behaviors. You don't want your mantra to be "Don't screw up", because you're not thinking positively. Personally, I would find clothing that is comfortable enough that you're not making these adjustments. Maybe try boxers instead of briefs.

I thought I'd bump this up to the top.

I can't believe I never mentioned checking the thumb hole as first order of business.
If you have seen Norm Duke Bowl, you will have most likely noticed him tending to this.
If it is your first order of business you have the right to adjust the tape.
This is a video from 2011, it is a somewhat comprehensive discussion on various bowling tapes. There are others on YouTube some USBC, some Norm Duke.

We all should have
Pre and Post Shot Routines.
All 300 games start with the first shot.
Buena suerte, bonne chance, ádh mór, powodzenia.
