Eric et al
Going to OC next month....will anything in my arsenal work or do you have a layout idea? or surface or ball recommendation to add to my current arsenal?

Currently using:

Breeze (double thumb) 60x4x30
Crux 75x3x35
Rocket 70x4x40
Nirvana 65x4x40

Thanks

You have all big hooking layouts. Not the best for dealing with the Nationals shot.
Your listed arsenal is for hooking the lane on THS.
They would come in handy once the lanes break down and you have to swing the lane. With those balls you will have to start too far inside and will break down the lane in a way that is not conducive to scoring well.

My current arsenal is as follows:

Storm Crux Pearl 75x3x35
Storm Tropical Breeze 60x4x30 Double Thumb
Storm IQ 30 65x5x35
Brunswick Nirvana 65x4x40
Storm Hyroad Pearl 85x4.25x50

I have purchased a Storm Pearl Hyroad, On THS I generally throw the IQ. I would like the \new ball to fit slightly below the IQ to go to maybe in the third game depending on how the pattern breaks down.
I was thinking ~80x51/2x45 or pin in ring finger likely ~80x4.25x55 Any thoughts? I do not want to create a boat anchor and I love the IQ reaction overall.

Thanks

80-5 1/2-45 is going to put the Pin Very close to the middle finger.

The IQ 30 is a low flare ball with a low flare layout.
Without a balance hole the layout is more like 75-5-35. Very low flare.
The core is not doing much for you, you are basically rolling the coverstock.
Storm's R2S pearl skids pretty long. Both balls have the same cover.
The Stronger Core of the HyRoad is going to get the ball it started sooner than the IQ

By the 3rd game I am assuming you have moved pretty far left and will need something that will recover and make a harder more angular move to the pocket.
The Stronger core of the Pearl HyRoad can help with this if you can get enough length.

I would consider pin in the ring finger MoHole, 85-4 1/4-50 (drilling angle measured to the thumb) This makes the ball Asymmetrical so it will have a longer skid zone and a more angular hook than your proposed layout of 80-5 1/2-45.

Those are my thoughts.

I would also have him work at reducing his tilt and speed, he would then have much more options and better carry.

I have a friend that has been trying to overcome some arm problems and is ready to drill up a new Hyroad solid 15#. He has only equipment now with pins up that looks like a large drill angle. He has 3 different balls that he drilled basically the same. I think he needs to start over and build his arsenal. He was throwing 14# for awhile but feels ok now.

Eric et al:

He needs several suggestions but wants this ball for extreme over/under THS on very old wood lanes.

His specs are:

Thanks Eric...I will pass this great info on and let you know how it works out.

For my Hyroad I am going to recheck my thumb pitch and change it tomorrow if needed, I really like how it rolls but was having some problems keeping the speed up.

My double thumb Tropical Chrome fits so well but certainly is a little weak and the Hyroad fits slightly above it if I can get the fit right. I am very optimistic.

Would his Symmetrical control look something like 50x4.25x60 roughly?

More like 70-4.25-60 balance hole 2" below midline on the VAL to lower the drilling angle to someting close to 50*. Give or take on the VAL angle pending on the grip span and to drill the pin out completely. The 70 is the drilling angle to the Cg. No need to kick the Cg out too far.

Eric:

Here is the update:

My friend drilled up the Hyroad solid and totally loves how it reacts.

I drilled my Hyroad Pearl per your layout instructions and it performs great. It continues through the pins. Small sample size as it took me awhile to modify the thumb. Had to drop a drill size and change the pitch slightly as my thumb is smaller due to relaxing more.

Eric,

I finally got around to adding a motion hole 3/4" on the Hyroad pearl and the ball reaction is exactly the tweak that I wanted.

Other than 2 2-10's in the third game I was very pleased. In retrospect I should have made a very small move but resisted. 20 strikes and only 2 10 pins in a house that has difficult carry.

My other equipment was just floating with a very low percentage of carry.

Thanks again
