Motion Analysis Sottware

Post by kajmk »

Any information or experience with motion analysis software.
Pros and Con's, price, requirements, input and output capabilities.
What you would need to use it well.
This is strictly for private use, for example download from YouTube, input from camera.
This is just to help me understand the sport and its athletes better.

I'm not in the business, never was, so I'm not looking to make a buck using it.

So if you've used something and care to share your review, I welcome your advice.

Thanks.
May all beings everywhere be happy and free,
and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life
contribute in some way to that happiness
and to that freedom for all.

John,
My list of analysis tools.

1) YTD video downloader…….I use this exclusively to down load videos from youtube for video analysis on this site.

a) Cost: free
b) Pros: cost and also has an option to convert video from one format to another.
c) Cons: ad to update to Pro version frequently appears upon opening the software.
d) Requirements: Computer with Windows operating environment
e) Input/output: accepts many types of files

2) Kinovea……….motion analysis software.

a) Cost: free
b) Pros: cost, also translates into 16 different languages. Multiple capture and playback screens.
c) Cons: none
d) Requirements: Computer with Windows operating environment
e) Input/ output: Down load file directly from folder or from camera.

In addition to items #1 & #2 above, I use Microsoft Powerpoint and Photoshop Elements (to enhance some of the lower grade videos submitted) for all the video analysis I do on this site.

3) Coach'sEye………I use this software on Ipad and Iphone for individual and group lessons

a) Cost; $4.99
b) Pros: easy to use, great support, good tool package, always updating software options
c) Cons: as with most video the camera’s sensitivity to low light is the eliminating factor. I find Ipad to be the best for my use in most centers (some centers lighting is like being in a cave unfortunately).
d) Requirements: Android or Apple product. I find the Ipad Air and newer versions camera better than the Android devices I’ve used.
e) Input /output: Directly from devices camera, also can import via the cloud, dropbox, etc

A big thanks to Thomas (Nsane on this site) for introducing the members of Bowlingchat to Kinovea.

Thanks Jim.
That list is typical Jim Merrell, clear, thorough, and helpful.

I just noticed my typo in the title.
What's that try say, measure twice, cut once ...

So where was spell check when I needed it.

I wonder how many bowlers out there use these tools for self analysis and learning?
Here's one example of use.
This one is for bowlers who have already received diagnosis and suggestions from a coach.
Typically Jim provides pictures with some graphic overlays.
A bowler could take subsequent self videos, and use some of this software to gauge progress, track performance week by week. Could be fun, could be a learning experience.

Here's a generic scenario -
Take an elite bowler who has made a telecast, download some YouTube video, analyze learn.
For example, bowlers come in all shapes and sizes, ages etc.
Find some that you resemble, analyze how they do what they do.
Yesterdays telecast of the 2015 Queens featured a variety of stylistic and stature differences.
Although different shapes and sizes, they all got it done!

When you study yourself, keep Jim Merrells motto in mind.

Hi John, this is how i go about things with coaching and analysis.

I've been using a Cannon PowerShot SX220 HS for many years now, which cost me about AU$220. It has full HD video, but also slow motion up to 240 fps, and video play back can be shown frame by frame. The screen on the back isn't huge but big enough to see detail and step through the video to check things. This is also great for doing ball roll analysis as i can zoom in on the ball going down the lane (at lane level) and keep it in focus.

I also use the app SloPro for my iPhone 5, which cost AU$5.99 to get the full version. This shoots at 60fps, but can be slowed down to 1000 fps. Clips can be trimmed and rendered, and i can email them straight to bowlers on the spot, as well as share them in other ways - save to camera roll, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube and iTunes.

Back home I put the footage into Sony Vegas Pro 11.0. I've been using Vegas for a long time and it doesn't cost me much now as i just get upgraded versions every few years, and then claim it as a tax deduction for work anyway. In Vegas, i can take screen shots to put into Word Docs to share info with bowlers, slow the clips down further, zoom in, do a split screen and compare a bowler with a pro frame by frame, use the overlay to check rotation, and it is easy to work out a bowler's speed and rpm very accurately using the frame counter. I also use it to make my YouTube videos, and you can render to different formats.

To get videos off YouTube i use keepvid.com which works a treat.

I wanted to float this topic up to the top.
From time to time, I've mentioned that serious bowlers should keep a video archive of themself.
Jim recommended some free software that can be a valuable tool for any bowler with a way to video themself and post it on YOUTUBE. Putting video on YOUTUBE is so simple even I have done it.
Try it, record yourself. Try recording you once a week, compare week to week. Potential slump buster/avoider, good development tool.
Pictures lie less than words and eyes ...
So you are not a coach or care to be, but I bet you'd like to either improve or avoid slumps ...
Use your own creative mind to help yourself ...

Cheers

Floating to the top again

For those interested in the two handed style, this video comparing several two handers, which is augmented with swing tracing graphics, may interest you.

If you have software, consider downloading the YouTube for study.
Video yourself, do side by side analysis.
