I believe THE GAME CHANGER is one of the best instuctional books ever penned-NOT for the beginner, but clearly written for the bowler who has the beginner's open mind and who takes his/her game seriously. If one wants a first rate introduction to the contemporary game as understood by Mark Baker than obtaining and reading this work is a MUST.

A great read.
100% not for the beginner bowler.
4/5 since I feel like its not as technical as "Par bowling", and I prefer just that over the (very good) story telling style.

I found Mark's book to be enlightening and entertaining.
After reading this book I think I can begin to understand why Mark is so highly regarded as a coach and instructor.

For those of us who do not know it all.

I know more now than I did before I read it, I only hope I remember it. :)

I'm looking forward to more from Mark.

I happened upon this while looking for some information over at http://www.pba.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This is an excerpt form a response by Charlie Tapp in the Technique Forum
I pick Marks brain from time to time and in my opinion his teaching is much more simplistic than some others. Like all instruction, it depends on what level you want to take your game to and what you're able to understand.

A few years ago I had hours of lessons done on video from a top notch instructor. Things never got any better,I sent the video to Mark and for what its worth, it took him 10 minutes to correct the problem.

After reading Mark's book earlier this year, i went and checked the timing spot of all the bowlers i coach, and discovered 2 things straight away. They all had late timing getting the ball moving, which gave them all early timing at the timing spot. The women bowler's especially were very early at the timing spot, as was the 2-hander i coach.

I decided to focus on getting them 'in time', which usually meant a combination of shorter and quicker steps prior to the slide, and getting them to 'hinge' much earlier than they were used to, while keeping the bowling arm muscle free.

One of the women that got the timing right in the first session we tried it has improved her power and ball roll immensely without extra effort, and as she was already super accurate, she has taken her game to the next level. Others are slowly getting closer to being 'in time' and the common response is they feel like they are adding speed and revs to their shot with no effort.

Re the 2-handers, Osku is a planter and has slightly early timing at the timing spot.

I just finished reading the book and I am really interested in setting up some coaching time with Mark Baker. I like his overall philosophy towards bowling. I also like the way he incorporated his negative experience with some golf pros that he took a lesson from into the book. He seems to understand that we're all human and that we all have our own style that we're working with.

If I happen to follow through on this, I'll report back my experience.

Currently 31 reviews on Amazon.
Although the number is paltry, it's a lot for a bowling book.

4/5 Great read. A little over the head for sure for the novice/beginner. A definite must for any coach looking for ideas to expand their nomenclature and scope for their students.

I did pick up a coaching book late last week which immediately identify a basic problem causing a lot of issues. Mark Baker's Game Changer. It should help no matter what your average is. If it's below 180, you'll find yourself taking video of yourself from behind to identify directional problems that cause you to miss your target. If you're above 180 and don't have directional issues, which is almost always true, you'll find yourself filming from the side to look at your timing in reference to what Baker calls, "The Timing Spot."

The timing spot is a pretty cool thing. Baker found that nearly every hall of fame bowler after the wood lane era, looked identical during one particular part of their approach. Namely, when their slide foot becomes flat on the lane, all of their swings are parallel to the ground.

He does name the only two Hall of Fame members who do not do this, and goes through why they don't have to. Those are Jason Couch and Marshall Holman.

It's a good read in general as well. Lots of stories interwoven with great coaching advice. The Kindle Version on Amazon is about $10.00, and you only need an Amazon account to read it, not a Kindle.
