Freeworkz

Post by JohnP »

Random links are showing up in various places on the forums, they are dark blue and underlined twice and are names or words that are used in the posts. When I run my mouse pointer over the link, even without clicking on it, a popup ad from Freeworkz comes up. This is happening only on this site, so I think it's site-related instead of something specific to my computer. What's going on? -- JohnP

I checked out webserver between our posts, and found nothing malicious out there.
Sounds to me like you have a virus OR a mallicious browser add-on thats manipulating HTML.

Update your virus library and run a scan, if that doesnt work, uninstall all your browser add-ons and check.

Smoking gun: I do not see what you see, and this is happening on multiple websites for you.

Sounds like your browser has been hijacked with some kind of adware.

I'd recommend downloading AVG Free Antivirus, and running a full scan post haste!

Thank you, RevZilla!!! I never thought of checking the program list to see if it was there. I uninstalled it and rebooted and after that it doesn't show up in the program list, so it's probably gone. -- JohnP

Did you try clicking on that link to remove it? You could also go to control panel, add/remove programs and look for it, highlight it, and click uninstall....assuming freeworx shows up there. If it is a major issue, I will try to remove it for you

Mo,
Manual removal of FreeWorkz from the registry can be achieved using the following. Close Internet Explorer and Explorer Windows first (just close everything). Run a cmd as an administrator. Windows XP, you probably are an administrator, just do; start, run, type "cmd". In Windows Vista and Windows 7 click start and type "cmd" in the search bar at the bottom. Hold control and shift when pressing enter to elevate it to administrator. Then copy each of the folling lines in to the cmd window and run them.
Each line goes from the reg to the /f inclusive. Highlight, hit control-c to copy. Right click in the black cmd window and select paste, then press enter to run that line.

Code: Select all

reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{D1ECD019-8423-43de-98D1-7892AF2DA309}" /f
reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{D1ECD019-8423-43de-98D1-7892AF2DA309}" /f
reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings\{D1ECD019-8423-43de-98D1-7892AF2DA309}" /f
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar" /v "{D1ECD019-8423-43de-98D1-7892AF2DA309}" /f
reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser" /v "{D1ECD019-8423-43de-98D1-7892AF2DA309}" /f
reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks" /v "{D1ECD019-8423-43de-98D1-7892AF2DA309}" /f
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\PreApproved\{D1ECD019-8423-43de-98D1-7892AF2DA309}" /f
reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{D1ECD019-8423-43de-98D1-7892AF2DA309}" /f
reg delete "HKCR\CLSID\{D1ECD019-8423-43de-98D1-7892AF2DA309}" /f
There's probably a folder called FreeWorkz under Program Files, you can delete that too (might need to reboot first).

Hope that helps.

Be VERY careful performing manual Registry edits, especially if you're not comfortable with computers!

I got rid of it by going to Control Panel (Start button, then select Control Panel), then clicking on Programs and Features. That gives a list of programs with the option to uninstall. I'm on Vista. -- JohnP

If my father, who is an accident attorney, would be just a little nicer, then this wouldn't have happened. One of his clients did this. OK, if no one else is seeing this it must be my computer. -- JohnP
Hamh.... ;) It's may be your computer problem or you are attacked by "Freeworkz" mania
Thanks
