True or Flase ,Mo Please help!

Post by coolerman »

This is one question that I can't find the answer to.Pre AMF automatic
pinsetters, did the bowling ball come in slightly different sizes.I'm not talking
about different weights, but smaller and larger sizes.Smaller people, women,
and younger bowlers could use the smaller balls. But with the advent of the
automatic pinsetter. The pin setter was set to only pick up one size ball, the
full sized ones.
I was told this years ago and do not know if it is the truth. The reason I
brought it up is, my great uncle just brought this up to me again two days ago.

I really am lost on this subject. Please help!

I don't know what year the size spec. on the bowling ball came into play, but I believe it was with the advent of the rubber ball, which was much earlier than the automatic pinsetter. As old as I am, I wasn't around then.

Coolerman-
I am old, but not that old, and yes, according to Bill Taylor, there were different size balls for those who could not throw the "big balls". Apparently, very popular in the pre automatic pin center era which could only return one size ball. Your great Uncle is correct.

Parents bought a small house in early '60's w/ semi-automatic setters and replaced w/ full automatic Brunswick. Had a "cork" ball on the rack that was slightly too big for the automatics to return. Brother still has it. No idea as to how old it is. Over 50 at the very least.

Also, use to be Ebonite bowling balls were slightly smaller than the others. Not sure that is still the case or not.

All US manufactured bowling balls are within .035" in diameter, even though the allowable range is .095".

We used to use cork balls when we where kids. My brother used to throw them as hard as he could so the pins would fly and hit the whino that was setting pins. :)

Mo and Gary.I found a video of different size balls on the ball return. It
occurs at the 1:18 mark of the video.Watch and pause at the 1:20 mark
and look at the size of the balls on the return.

I have a ball in the shop that is about the same size as the one the lady used. Don't know where it came from, have asked severeal old timers and none know. I thought it might be a duck pin ball, but it has the gripping holes and all the duck pin balls I've ever seen don't. -- JohnP
