Layout help needed

Post by CuriousBowler »

Well I'm looking for some layout suggestion help for bowling on a THS. Would love help with control/benchmark type layout. As for info I know about myself.

Right handed no thumb bowler
PAP is 5 7/8 over by 1 3/8 down
High track/low tilt less than 10
Axis rotation 40-45
Ball speed around 14.5-15mph based off lane monitor pretty sure speed is taken downlane
Definitely consider myself rev dominant

With all that said my biggest struggle is my ball hooking to hard at the breakpoint. Accuracy isn't the best at times, so ugly splits definitely an issue for me. So with the info I posted above, any suggestions for Symmetrical/Asymmetrical ball layouts?

Not knowing your rev rate makes for just guessing on layouts.
Estimations on release specs only gets you layout estimates.

Low Tilt, High Revs and a lack of speed is not a good combination.
You obviously know what over reaction is as that is what you are experiencing.
Rev dominance can be helped with layout but it is not a fix all.

The best advice I can give at this point is to look into some coaching.
Revamping your arsenal is not going to make you a better bowler.
I could give some layout suggestions but they will just keep you trying to over rev the ball reinforcing poor technique.

Eric,

I appreciate the reply, and yes I do lack knowing my rev rate. I consider it being higher, and when matched with my ball speed, definitely consider myself to be rev dominant. Being a one handed no thumb bowler, I definitely stay under the ball a good amount.

As for the coaching suggestions, honestly not something I have the time for right now. I literally league bowl once a week, my practice these days, is the 10 minutes we get for warmup before league starts. I'm not a terrible bowler by any means, average near 210 these days.

My biggest issue is accuracy lacks a bit, I know bowling one handed no thumb, factors into that. My question to you, is I have tried a couple balls with longer 5 inch pin to pap distance, with bigger VAL angle, and honestly it feels at times it just enhances my ball jumping at the breakpoint even harder. Does that make sense to you?

As for layout suggestions minus my actual rev rate. Would you even be up to spit balling a suggestion? I don't think my rev rate is anything to crazy. But I could see it in the 350, or so range, which I feel would be high for someone with a 14.5-15mph ball speed based off monitor at bowling alley. Anyways thanks again for the reply, totally understand if you're not comfortable making a suggestion. Overall if you did suggest something I wouldn't come back on here, and be upset, if I didn't like the end result.

I hate to guess, but I do understand what you are struggling with.
There are a couple of ways to deal with this.
One, purchase weaker balls. Low differential higher Rg light oil coverstock.
Two, layout stronger balls weaker. I like this approach.

Try this...
Short Pin to PAP on an Asymmetrical Pearl with a Strong Core.
90-1.5-30

I think with this type of set up you will be looking for the friction rather than trying to avoid it.

I chose a Pearl for you to start, you may want to add some surface depending on your bowling environment.
This kind of layout needs some friction to get into a roll.
Speed deficient bowlers can benefit from shinier surface preps. But don't be afraid of playing a Pearl not shiny, works great in my experiences.
