The weakest solid cover reactive ball?

Post by markkuhn »

Folks, I'm bowling lefty now due to a permanent injury to my right hand.
I stepped down to 14 pounds to bowl lefty. My ball speed is still very slow and I'm working on that.
What is the weakest solid cover reactive currently available?

Thanks again everyone.

Hi Mark.

Mark, here are some resources used by forum members

If you want to keep abreast of equipment, "Bowlers Journal" and "Bowling This Month" conduct reviews. Bowler's Journal had a matrix listing attributes and characteristics. Bowling This Month, offers articles on skill development etc.

I wanted to opine that surface is a major factor that you can regulate and control.
Your PSO sounds like a square shooter, I suggest you have a chat with him.

Tweaking surface may be good enough for now.

I've not kept up with equipment in 15 or so years as I've not been bowling.
I stopped due to massive paradigm shifts (aka pogrom, aka blood letting) on the job and a bout with the Big C.

Alternatively, consider working with a coach.
Using your left arm has some potential benefits.

All bowler's must learn to trust their bowling grip of their swing will be impaired.
Your PSO probably had you roll some shots in the shop and should easily tell if you are relaxing, need an adjustment, need tape.

You are still training your left side.
I suggest that you start doing more than bowl lefty.
Open doors put things in and out of cupboards and refrigerator.
Fold your hands as if to pray, note where your thumb is, now reverse the position.
Tie your shoes, note which loop is on top, now tie them reversing the loops.

Get a tennis ball, or softball, or nerf football, or Pilates ball.
Practice tossing them into a basket.

Del Ballard broke his arm as a boy falling off a bike.
During his regal, he rolled golf balls into a mousehole he cut in a shoe box.
When he returned to bowling, he feared injuring his arm again so he softened his game.
As a result of a new mentality and freer swing, he vastly improved.

I bet with some good 1:1 coaching you can add ball speed using gravity and footwork.

You are still in your formative phase.
Have faith in your dedication and desire.

Physically, don't let preconceived ideas and perceptions shackle you.
Improve what you can, just what that is depends on you and your circumstances.
If it's attitude, then that can be changed.
Like Satchel Paige said, "Age is a matter of mind. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter".
"How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were?".

Take care.
May all beings everywhere be happy and free,
and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life
contribute in some way to that happiness
and to that freedom for all.

The Brunswick Twist is a nice, controllable ball, good looking too.

As a footnote to the above, in today's bowling ball manufacturing environment, bowling balls are the same whether they are pearl or solid. Seems pretty difficult to believe, but it's true.

The Brunswick BTU is the weakest I have seen. There is one on ebay so they still have it somewhere. From what I hear it is not a urethane. I have one and haven't used it much but will.
