INNOVATIVE PLUG CUTTER
I have innovative brand with innovative drillpress and jig. No matter what I do I’m getting marking or rings on one side of ball? When looking at it the blade in holder looks off as in when you line it up on ball tight on both sides(ball surface) then spin cutter 180* looks tight on one half and daylight on the other. I’m afraid to try to straighten it in holder and make it worse.

Re: INNOVATIVE PLUG CUTTER
The drill may need to be calibrated. Do not always believe that the 0 0 on the guage is really 0 0. A quick way to check is to set the guage to 0 0 put the ball and plug cutter in the drill. Lower the plug cutter to the surface of the ball and then put a 5$ bill between the plug cutter and the ball. The money should be able to move without beng caught. Rotate the plug cutter by hand and test every direction of the 0 0 setting. If the money gets stuck using this test then the 0 0 setting needs to be adjusted. This test does not take very long to do and will prove the accuracy of the 0 0 setting. By the way a 10$ bill in not twice as accurate as a 5$ bill.

Not sure if you read my entire comment but I do something similar...
I line up the plug cutter on the ball surface. It lines up fine.
Then I spin cutter 180* and one side will be tight while the other has a space?
Either way I will be contacting Innovative about the issue as MEGAMAV suggested.

Re: INNOVATIVE PLUG CUTTER
I did read the entire note. Maybe because I am located so far away from support I just get things fixed myself. Re-calibrating should not take very long once Innovative get there.

It wasn’t meant to come off smug. I appreciate the information! I honestly think it is in the cutter and not in the fact of having my drill press zeroed.JimH wrote:I did read the entire note. There was no offence taken. I check the calibration of my drill every few weeks.Lledsmarttam wrote:It wasn’t meant to come off smug. I appreciate the information! I honestly think it is in the cutter and not in the fact of having my drill press zeroed.
Re: INNOVATIVE PLUG CUTTER
There should be 2 set screws in the cutter body that hold the blade in place - stacked on top of each other, to prevent backing out.
Remove the first set screw, then break the second/inner screw loose, and snug up just enough to hold the blade, but where you can still tap it sideways.
Set the press to 0-0, line up the blade, and verify as you have been.
If you have a set of calipers, you could also try centering the blade by measuring. That should work, but I've not done it that way before.
No need to crank the screws when tightening - that can make it very difficult to loosen later on. You could use loctite on the screws/blade to help keep everything in place.
If you have some scrap balls, you can do a different "calibration" of the press. Set to 0-0, drill, then measure with pitch gauges. You'll know immediately which way to adjust for a perfect 0, if needed.

Re: INNOVATIVE PLUG CUTTER
I have an Innovative plug cutter and I don’t like it. It’s about 6 months old and I haven’t used it too much. I don’t like the way it comes pre-dulled. When cutting plugs down, instead of just gradually shaving the plug down, it really rub-ablates and generates too much heat from the friction. The plug material (CS and epoxy based) winds up with a rough texture that looks like is from small cavitation pockets of vaporization due to the heat. If I go real slow, the effect is reduced but not enough. I wind up having to leave the plug proud and then shave it down which king of defeats the purpose. Does anyone make a nice sharp cutter that will shave instead of rub-abalate? I really don’t want to go back to a router. BTW, I have a brand new Innovative mill drill that’s dead nuts zeroed out.

Re: INNOVATIVE PLUG CUTTER
Undo the set screws and align the blade so that it will be equal when you rotate it at 0 - 0. Of course make sure your press is calibrated and accurate at 0 - 0. Might be the cutter... might be the press.
Right Handed, 16-17 mph off hand (14 -15 mph on Qubica reading) ,350 rpm,PAP 4 3/4 x 1/4 up, 17 deg axis tilt, varied rotational axis deg.. usually 45+

Re: INNOVATIVE PLUG CUTTER
Thanks for your reply. I already checked all of that and it the mill drill is only 6 - 9 months old. I just looks like the cutting edge is too dull. I know John "pre-dulls" them to get them to work smoothly; mine just seems too dull.J_w73 wrote:Undo the set screws and align the blade so that it will be equal when you rotate it at 0 - 0. Years ago, when I worked at another shop, I had a Baxter bit that was sharper and worked like one was shaving the ball with a bevel knife. Although it didn't last long and it tended to leave that annoying little tit in the center of the plug but otherwise worked better than this - on a clapped out Gil-Mac no less.
