I finally read this book.
I highly recommend it! If and when I have time, I'll embellish my review, but suffice it to say, this book can help many more than it cannot.
If you've read it, please add your comments on the amazon website too. Please also request this book be made available in ereader format. Lets get this book and other bowling books on ereader format.

Re: Rate/Review - Bare Bones Bowling - Brian Voss
Haven't read it myself, but I did pick up a coaching book late last week which immediately identify a basic problem causing a lot of issues. Mark Baker's Game Changer. It should help no matter what your average is. If it's below 180, you'll find yourself taking video of yourself from behind to identify directional problems that cause you to miss your target. If you're above 180 and don't have directional issues, which is almost always true, you'll find yourself filming from the side to look at your timing in reference to what Baker calls, "The Timing Spot."
The timing spot is a pretty cool thing. Baker found that nearly every hall of fame bowler after the wood lane era, looked identical during one particular part of their approach. Namely, when their slide foot becomes flat on the lane, all of their swings are parallel to the ground.
He does name the only two Hall of Fame members who do not do this, and goes through why they don't have to. Those are Jason Couch and Marshall Holman.
It's a good read in general as well. Lots of stories interwoven with great coaching advice. The Kindle Version on Amazon is about $10.00, and you only need an Amazon account to read it, not a Kindle.

Bcp27, when you have a few moments would you add your comments and also your rating on the rate/review thread for Marks book too? I can't cut and paste the link with this device or I would.
Check out the wiki under Coaching/Instructional Material/Books, there you will find links to books that have been reviewed by members.
Your point about e-reader access is an important one.
Amazon now has a way to request kindle versions for some books and the Brian Voss book is one.
So if you have not already posted there, please do.
Thanks

Not intended as pejorative.
Check with your local library. Many have websites with online search capabilities.
Next, cheaper options, used book stores.
As a bowler, what you know can make what you throw return some dough.
What you know and how you use it will help you get the most bang for your bowling buck.
The price of a plastic ball these days would buy you some of the best bowling educational material around.
In any endeavor, disdain for feeding the brain, is the ultimate bane.
Cheers

I think it's right up there with Par Bowling. As far as the modern game is concerned, it's probably "the" book to read and study. I think it needs a bit more editing, there are parts where I am unsure where the transitions are (probably fixed by placing the diagrams/pictures on the same page as the topics discussed). Regardless, I refer to it constantly, and recommend it to anyone serious about the game (coach or student).

Yes, I agree 100%. The illustrations are great and sections on mechanics are very well explained.
First book I found that really went into detail on release in a meaningful way. The sections on lane play and transition were also really valuable to me. The idea of making small (near continuous) adjustments and looking slightly past the arrows has helped me tremendously at times.
I'm disappointed that he's taken up the "anti 2 hander" crusade, but it doesn't diminish his bowling skill, accomplishments or writing/teaching capability.

I think you made a great point of getting the text and diagrams on the same page. And sited a way to improve the product. That has been a minor annoyance in many books.Viper wrote:I think it's right up there with Par Bowling. As far as the modern game is concerned, it's probably "the" book to read and study. Regarding the two handed style. Change takes time. Eventually this will not even be an issue.stevespo wrote:Yes, I agree 100%. The illustrations are great and sections on mechanics are very well explained.

While waiting for car maintenance to be done, I brought my copy to the waiting area to browse through.
When I read the book the first time, I copied some salient sayings and cogent quotes by Brian, which serve as mini lessons of cause and effect.
This is an excellent instructional book. Although Brian is not an advocate of the two handed swing, I have no doubt he could both do it and teach it very well.
You can get a copy for around ten percent of the price of a premium ball.
Knowledge is your most important asset!
