So, I'm getting ready to bowl on a flood

Post by Mongo »

Setting up bag for a tournament which is a virtual flood (44-47 feet, 45+ mL), No more than 1.8:1.

I know up front there is going to be zero visible motion on the left (anything left of 10 is hitting the 2-4 in the face), I just want some that will slow down and go through the pins. I've should have a Dragon on the porch today and I've got an Absolute Nirvana NIB in the basement. Also, I just punched up a Conspiracy (60 x 4 1/2 x 50)

My specs (ranges, I do have some flexibility)
RPM - 325-400
Speed - 17-19
Tilt - 7
Axis - 55

Thoughts on layouts for both the Dragon and Absolute

My inital thoughts are
Absolute Nirvana - 30 x 4 x 60
Katana Dragon - 30 x 4 1/2 x 45

Eric is our resident expert on the layouts, but you'll need something with a short VAL angle to get that ball off the spot. Probably something like 60 x 4 x 30. I'm sure Eric will have the proper suggestion. I wouldn't hesitate to go less on the VAL angle. The amount of volume is going to effectively increase ball speed but the amount of skid 45ml would create. The ball isn't going to think about picking up.

Also, if it were me, I'd have a 180, 360 and 500 grit pad in my bag.

I always start with the Sweetspot and work from there.
Mongo I see your release is changing to less tilt as the years go by.
Sweetspot ...........95 total 2.25:1 Ratio

Long Oil Sport ........... 30-5-45 ............... Katana Dragon
Totally Strong ........... 55-4-20
Midlane .................. 45-3.5-30 .............. Absolute Nirvana
Benchmark ............... 65-3-30

Surface is going to be paramount to breaking the lanes down. 500 grit on the Katana and 1000 grit on the Nirvana.

Break down the line starting with the Katana transition to the Nirvana.
Once the lanes open up you get into your main arsenal based on what the lanes are giving you.

Eric, look at you paying attention. My tilt has decreased a little and PAP has moved about 1/4" right and 1/4" up. Speed and rev rate holding for now.

Looks like we're thinking alike on the Dragon. As for the Nirvana and this "opening" up, yeah, with that volume and lack of traffic on the left side, that never happens. What happened last year is the righties beat the hell out of the heads with 360 and 180 grit and destroyed the heads. Laydown was restricted to pointing it outside of 10 up the lane.

I've got 3 weeks, but I'm in total agreement with the layout on the Katana Dragon. Thx.

Please follow up Mongo, I wish you good luck. That is an absurd high volume of oil, feel free to slow down and apply as many revs as you wish. Yeeeeah! Happy new year man! I really like when forum members are bowling conditions that are in a different galaxy than your average THS, yeeew!

We've got the pattern plugged into the Flex at our house. I'll be practicing on it a bit over the next 2-3 weeks (throwing it left to right isn't a strength as I'm LH).

If I remember, I'll post a video. It's, um, interesting to see a ball not move no matter the ball, grit, or release.

Eric,

I am trying to "learn stuff" here, and I was able to determine the layouts you recommended only after I backed out an adjustment for "lower" tilt.

I assume anything in the 7 - 10 degree range is in the lower tilt category?

As requested, here is a quick shot from today's practice session.

Throwing a C300 Saber at 1000, 70 x 4 x 50

That is as much motion as I can get. Anything left of that is a washout.

Calm your hand down in the swing and just roll the ball.
Dont snap or grab at it. It will roll up more in the midlane and give a better ball motion.
Please post again.

I tend to "over yo yo" it when I'm looking for more hook, but appreciate the comment. Sadly, today was the last chance to practice on something close to what I'll see this weekend.

I'm going to try to grab some video during the tournament and will post. No promises, but if I get a good cross, I'll throw up some video.

Also, look for some vids in the coaching section soon. I need fresh eyes.
