Basically stole a Vintage Inferno on eBay ($32 + shipping) and decided to punch it up.
Nothing crazy (50 x 4 x 40), figured with what I'd read/seen, it would clear the fronts, rev up in the mids (2.47 RG) and have a little pop down lane. My hope was this would be a step up from my Ridiculous Pearl.
Not what I got.
It does clear the fronts and seem to rev up, but that's it. Ball won't make the corner short of standing on top of the dry. I knocked the OOB finish off with a 2000 pad and that did nothing. The ball hates oil.....like really hates oil.
Thought about taking it down to 1000 or just putting the box surface back on it and use it for when they get really toasty.
Anybody else punch one up and have something similar happen....or totally opposite?
So, my Vintage Inferno rolls like a turd

Follow up
Went out today and got lucky enough to try on dead fresh and leftovers from last night.
Here's what I learned
This ball HATES oil and LOVES friction. Most over/under ball I've thrown in a while. On the burned pair, it checked up the minute it saw dry. On the fresh pair, it was a spare ball inside of 10. I tried 3 different surfaces (shiny, 3000, and 1500). I tried slow rolling it. I tried knuckling it up the dry. One thing was consistent.....skates in oil, jumps off the dry.
I'm really sad because I wanted to love this ball, but, no....I hate it.

It sounds like the regular Vintage Inferno is core dominant based on your description.
Here is what I would do if I were you, hit the ball hard with 500 and either do a 2000 on top or compound it by hand to the finish you desire. Remember the old infernos had the deep factory finishes like 220/Compound (Absolute) or 400/Polish (Inferno).

I'll give it a try. Can't hurt at this point since right now it's a doorstop.MegaMav wrote:

My only concern it with that rough of a surface, my hopes of a "throw it out and recover" ball might be out the window.

Why would you say that?Mongo wrote:

More surface means it will pick up earlier.
Out the window is possible with finer surfaces on a weak cover.

I'm sandblasting it tomorrow. Working next few days, but will update when I get a chance to throw it again.MegaMav wrote:
