i've been bowling only for a few years and absolutely love the sport. I'm 53 years old and wish that I had picked it up years ago. I've been watching a lot of YouTube videos folks on this site have been posting as well as the ones that I found on my own. I want to share a video that I found, perhaps some may have already have seen called "How not to hit up on the ball and roll better?". This video is a good reminder for the follow through; to keep your palm up, stay behind the ball, keep forearm/inner elbow pointing toward the pins. During my last 2 practices at the bowling alley I was more consistent with hitting my target. I got more revs on the ball. I also improved the ball entry angle to the pocket. Just in time for league as it starts up next week. This video should help folks who are trying to get away from chicken winging it, coming around the side or on top of the ball etc.

There's also some mis-information and generalisations in that video. They are not being made by a bowling coach.

Yeah, it was a bit confusing.
I do finish with my hand up and elbow bent, but I’m quite sure I don’t “hit up” on the ball.

Dean,
Could you be more specific, please? I think it would help me.

It is just as important, if not more important, to get to the foul line at the proper time. A lot of people become too fixated on controlling the arm orientation. If the approach is done correctly, the ball should flow when it's in the swing. Focusing primarily on the arm position will inevitably lead to a restricted swing.

Good point. I haven't been bowling much the past 14 months since my back surgery, but when I do my timing is terrible. It doesn't matter too much what position I get my hand to at the line when I'm not in time.TomaHawk wrote:It is just as important, if not more important, to get to the foul line at the proper time. Re: Video: "How NOT to "Hit up" on the Ball and Roll Better?
Hitting up on the ball is even worse when bowling on non-house shots. My summer league used the Kegel Challenge shots, and I found if I hit up on it the least little bit, it would hook early for me. Shots that felt like they "fell off my hand" had much more length and a much better back end reaction. Truly less is more with today's equipment. The key for me was to make sure I got into the swing on time. If I was late, hitting up with the result.
