bowling against plastic ......

Post by turbotwister »

recently i posted about bowling against someone using urethane....today i bowled against a bowler using plastic and man, what a circus i had. he was using a sanded plastic ball and and throwing a bender (from @15 out to 10 and back) and killing my shot. when i went outside or down and in, my ball wouldn't react to anything (lots of carry down) .....just slide, then when i played inside ....couldn't bring it back. today wasn't something that i wasn't prepared for....has anybody run into this situation ? i don't know if he realized it or not but i was a little troubled by it and a couple other bowlers told me that they don't like bowling with him because of that.......

Yes, my Tuesday mixed league has some older bowlers who use this method. I stay with a strong ball and try to keep the break point inside of theirs so you have some cushion.

i tried everything and anything but couldn't fight the carry down. i watch some of the pro's when they are bowling against the urethane bowlers and they struggle too. i even tried "straight is greater"...that didn't work either...pearl didn't work any better. oh well.... i guess i'll take my urethane just in case for the next time and join in on the fun that he was having...lol

Unless you are using a very non-aggressive reactive ball and bowling against a very, very accurate plastic-ball bowler, your ball will not read carry down. I know this because I have had tapes taken which showed that there was nowhere on the lane, past the pattern, that had more than 2 units of oil in carry down streaks. Reactive resin balls do not "see" two units of oil. That's just a fact. What you are probably seeing is your own line drying out and burning up your line. Stop worrying about carry down and think about what YOU are doing to the lane!

IMO as someone that bowls competitively on all sorts of oil patterns and conditions, I think you're 100% dead wrong on carrydown.
My ball motion sees it, and its not early hook.
We've disagreed on this before and I disagree with you again.
Adding any lubricant to the lane surface will affect a ball's ability to traction on the surface.
That quote you have about balls not seeing only a few units of oil is from a study from many years ago, before oils became much slicker and more viscous.

All I can tell you is that since by spine degeneration has worsened, I have thrown nothing but plastic since last summer. I practice with friends who all throw reactives, and I often see their balls start going straighter. When I move out to where they are playing, my non-reactive plastic ball dives through the nose. My ball will react to carry down, but it's reacting to increased friction.

I'm sure we'll never agree, but I'm just trying to offer a different perspective.

I agree with Rob on this one. One bowler throwing plastic/urethane is not going to have an effect on anyone throwing resin - certainly not in league. The people affected will be others throwing urethane/plastic.

On sport shots, particularly one vs one, then you might see some change in ball reaction. That's just due to their flat nature. But in that case, I'd welcome carry down to create some hold.

If I can get my Hot Cell to hook through carry down, you can easily get your resin balls to hook through it.

Since I rarely see this problem on any of the leagues we currently have if I would run into something like that I'm going to get the most aggressive ball I got, move in off his line and start burning up my own spot.
