Layouts for Senior Lefty

Post by stevespo »

I started a thread in the wrong place, and my data was a bit out of date. I have shot new video and updated his stats. His PSO has retired, and I'm trying to help with layouts on newer equipment.

Senior lefty, good solid, consistent bowler (former coach). Low speed/revs. Most of his equipment tends toward strong covers, high flaring cores with lower ratios, like 30-3.5-25, 40-4-40. Likes to knock the polish off with a 4000 grit on house shots like Stone Street with lower friction Pro-Anvilane.

Tends to have an ok look on the fresh, but starts leaving corner pins and has difficulty moving into the oil, and still creating angle. Is most comfortable playing 1st to 2nd arrow, but working on that.

Speed off hand: 12 mph
Rev: 120-145 rpm
Tilt: 25*
Rotation: 50*
PAP: 3.75 x +0.5

I recently drilled a Paradox Trilogy 55x5x30, but should have verified his data first. Even so, it's a reasonably good look on the fresh. He has a Rhino Gold pro that he would like to try as a benchmark ball, but based on reviews, it looks to me more like a dry condition ball - and that's where I think he could benefit from.

Any layout advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Slower speed bowlers don't necessarily need a super cover for a Benchmark reaction.
I think the Gold Rhino could be a good Benchmark ball for him.
I benchmark him at 85* total 1:1 Ratio 42-4.5-43 Asymmetrical

Symmetrical Benchmark 45-3-40 balance hole 1.5" below the midline on the VAL

The Symmetrical Benchmark puts the pin close to the edge of the ring finger. Adjusting it to pin in the ring finger, I don't know the span, it would be something like 45-3 3/8-48.
It does weaken the ball reaction a little, he can always add some surface to it.

Adjusting away from the ring finger 45-3-35 will make the hook zone a little more angular.

Thanks Eric, sounds good. We'll give that a try and report back.

I should have mentioned that this is a 14 lb ball, and it was previously drilled "pin in ring finger" for a righty.

I plugged the ball and drilled 45x3x40, symmetrical benchmark layout. CG didn't move at all. I ended up with 1.25 oz side weight and a 0.30 oz of thumb, providing some balance hole options.

Odd thing is I spun the drilled ball on the determinator and it spins like a Z spinning core. The PSA locations average out to roughly the plugged thumbhole, not the new one. This did have a Vise IT, so it was a fairly large plug, but I expected to see a reasonably well defined PSA near the new thumb. I incorrectly assumed I'd have to use a balance hole to pull the PSA towards the plugged thumb and create the 45* drill angle.

Is this a byproduct of the 14 lb ball and large plug? Unsure about weight hole at this point, but perhaps on the VAL still makes sense? I don't want to decrease the drill angle, so perhaps just roll it first and then do the minimum weight hole to make it static legal...

Thanks,

Steve

I don't believe it has anything to do with it being a 14#'er.
The lack of density and size of the ball plug would be my assessment.

Let him roll it and make a decision on the balance hole after that.

The ball requires a balance hole to be legal on static weights, the question is where to put it and what size & depth to make it. -- JohnP
