Re: Going to purchase Innovative proshop package.
I have experience with two of John's jigs, the PowerVac and the New Standard. Both are very stable and extremely accurate.
I purchased a PowerVac model in December for my store. I can work much faster when I need to be in production mode on that model.
You do not need a Ferrari jig to cut ovals on either, if you do not want to. Either would be a fine purchase.

You can drill ovals with all the packages John sells.

Re: Going to purchase Innovative proshop package.
The guy that drills my stuff has a much more advanced press it has digital scales, I understand how to drill and all that, but it would be harder to get the oval correct because the starter pro shop package does not have them. Correct me if i'm wrong. I just figured it would be easier using the Ferrari jig

The price of the Ferrari Jig though It just seems like a lot of money just to make drilling ovals "easier".

I've never had any problem cutting ovals, or custom shaped thumbs, on a good mill. I can cut custom shaped thumbs easily with the mill with no added accessories. I prefer using an R8 collet to a keyless chuck.

Re: Going to purchase Innovative proshop package.
I know this is an old thread, however I have been using a keyless chuck and have the tapering issue you speak of and recently found out about using a collet. However in my mind using the collet and having to loosen the draw bar at the top of the drill every time I change a bit will be time consuming?
However I have also found online Collet Chucks and wondered if this is a better option in terms of speed of bit change?
So I believe this is the traditional R8 collet: http://www.warco.co.uk/collets/266-r8-d ... ype-r8_1_2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And then this is the collet chuck: http://www.warco.co.uk/milling-collet-c ... results=18" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I know the collet chuck is more expensive but means you do not have to loosen the draw bar every time you change drill bit?

Re: Going to purchase Innovative proshop package.
Right. You could get a 1pc 1/2" R8 collet, but would have to loosen the drawbar to change tools.
Alternately, you could use an R8 shank to ER32 collet, where you'd use spanner(s) on the collet to more easily change bits. You mght even be able to get away with hand tightening. You'd probably just need a single 1/2" collet and the R8 to ER32 can be found very cheaply (at least in the US).
Neither one of them is as convenient as a keyless chuck, but they do a much better job of resisting horizontal cutting forces. Personally, I use an ER32 with a 1/2" collet (with MT3 shank in my Arboga mill) and love it.

Re: Going to purchase Innovative proshop package.
I had no issues with speed on an AMF Vaccujig using a standard R8 and drawbar. Could cut and finish a standard 3 round holed ball in ~ 4 minutes.

Having to open the top of the mill, loosen the drawer bar, change the bit, tighten the drawer bar and then close the top of the mill for every hole must add time?rmack wrote:I had no issues with speed on an AMF Vaccujig using a standard R8 and drawbar. Re: Going to purchase Innovative proshop package.
Some mill drawbars are exposed and some are under a cover. You could add a power drawbar (pneumatic or electric) but those are fairly expensive.
R8 to ER32 should solve your problem affordably and not add any serious time or frustration changing tools. The 1/2" R8 collet is so cheap you could always try it first.

As Steve said, exposed draw bars and 30 years of practice... it goes just about as fast as a speed chuck.strikelineproshop wrote: Having to open the top of the mill, loosen the drawer bar, change the bit, tighten the drawer bar and then close the top of the mill for every hole must add time?

Re: Going to purchase Innovative proshop package.
Thanks gents, I hadn't realised some draw bars are exposed. Think I will give the ER32 a go.
