Introducing - Reputations

Post by MegaMav »

*This feature has been put in on a trial basis, feedback and use of this feature will determine if it is a permanent addition*

BowlingChat Community,

I am excited to introduce our latest feature, reputations!
No longer will you be judged as a poster solely based on your post count.

At the lower right hand corner of each post you'll see a thumbs up and thumbs down along with a number.
hands.JPG
For each post, this small interface can increase or decrease each users reputation.
If a post is useful to you, or you feel its of great quality, thank the poster by giving it a thumbs up.

To prevent fraudulent voting, the rep system considers only a single reputation change per 24hrs made by one user to another. However, dont let this stop you from +1'ing multiple posts per day for the same user. You'll still be able to give a thank you for a quality post.

If a post is of poor content, press the thumbs down button for negative feedback.
You can only vote down if you have a reputation of at least 25.

By clicking on the number between the hands, you'll be able to see who has voted on that particular post and which way they've voted.

I have added reputation to your profile summary seen on each post as well as your profile for reference.
When you click on either of those reputation numbers, you'll see a summary of who has voted for you in the past and which way they have voted.

I hope everyone enjoys this new feature, please leave me some feedback on how you like it.
Feel free to test it on my post here to see how it works.

Just one more feature helping to make BowlingChat.net the best bowling forum on the internet.

This may work on these forums. No poison pen posts, please. You're really going to find out about the character of our members. Good luck!

Interesting, I've seen this other place before, not sure what to make of it here... if I am looking for an answer/help for me, I really don't care if someoone gives me a thumbs up or down based on what their opinion of the merit of the question is... really. This goes right along with "don't be afraid to ask a dumb question, there are no dumb questions"... just an opinion. Good luck.

Mo and Jakester both make good points.

So far it doesn't look like anyone is abusing the system, so I think it becomes a question of does it really help? Does it make a new member more comfortable with the answer he/she gets from any given person? Does it make a new member or person with low / no reputation points more or less likely to offer an answer or opinion?

I know, not really a yea or nay answer to your question. I think it could go either way, and I don't have the answers to my thoughts above. Sorry. ;)

I just wanted the helpful posters out there to be rewarded not just based on their post counts.

If I didnt know any better, and were new here, I'd probably gauge usefulness based on rep, yeah.

If someone has 300 posts in the past year with 0 rep versus someone with 200 posts and 20-30 rep, I'd say the guy with the rep has been consistently helpful and agreeable in terms of responses. I think it empowers certain posters.

The biggest thing is, I dont see a lot of "+1" posts being generated.
That saves on database space and screen space.
Was a post helpful?
Click the thumbs up, its the passive way to agree.

I notice we've been a bit slow since the rep app went down.
I've disabled it temporarily to speed things up.
I'll keep an eye on things, and when its back up, i'll re-enable it.

I would give you a "+1" if I could. [snicker]

The apps between my ears have been getting slower as time goes by.
Oh well.

Thanks Eric for keeping the ship afloat and moving in the right direction.
May all beings everywhere be happy and free,
and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life
contribute in some way to that happiness
and to that freedom for all.
