Im having fit problems with the thumb.

Post by Rjf300 »

My span is 4 5/8s x 4 11/16 the thumb is 1/16 left and 1/16 rev. I really need help on this, im going to reno in 3 weeks.

MF is 3/8 left 3/8 rev, Ring is 3/8 right 1/4 rev. I feel locked in the ball and i cant have a clean release. Span is correct 4 5/8 x 4 11/16s

A little more bevel could do the trick, hard to tell without looking at the ball. Or try increasing the reverse pitch a little, say to 3/16. -- JohnP

One thing before changing your grip, do you keep your thumb straight throughout your delivery? Does it feel like you'll drop the ball if you don't squeeze? Is your thumbhole, in any way, snug? Do you use tape in your thumbhole? What about rosin or anything on your thumb?

Do you use an oval thumb?
Do you use a switchgrip thumb?
I as because I do and had the outer sleeve come loose and twist causing the angle of the oval to be wrong making it hang on my thumb. fwiw

Have the angle of the oval checked if its not correct it will hang up on you. Also if you are turning your hand while your thumb is still in the ball that will also make it hang up.

Correct me if I am wrong, but whenever I have such a problem, it is because the thumb hole is not ovaled enough, and is too tight on the sides.

See post #2 for my recommendation. Try more bevel first, that's easiest, if that doesn't help increase reverse. 1/16 reverse is low for your spans. -- JohnP

My suggestion is to go to your nearest pro shop and get assistance. If you want best guess, then you are in the right place (internet). No one can accurately correct your problem unless you are in their shop. Ask some of the better bowlers where they go and give that shop a try.

line up your fingers straight around the bottle/ can. Have them staddle a line that goes around the can. line up the base of your thumb to this line and then "grab" the can. The can test needs to someone simulate putting your hand into the ball to get the pitches right. Just grabbing a can any old way doesn't give accurate results.. especially when it comes to reading the info off of pictures.

You can also put your fingers in a ball, line them up down the T-line, and then see how the pitch of your thumb looks as you bring the base of your thumb over the T-line to go into the thumb hole.. If it looks like your thumb is going left, then you pitch is probably good... If it looks like it is pointing or wanting to go a different way, then you need some adjustments.

I had problems forever with my thumb, like you, always feeling locked in.. Until I took a real close examination of my thumb orientation, I could never get the right fit. I think I have finally found the solution after years of trying.
Right Handed, 16-17 mph off hand (14 -15 mph on Qubica reading) ,350 rpm,PAP 4 3/4 x 1/4 up, 17 deg axis tilt, varied rotational axis deg.. usually 45+

I had this problem for years, wander around in forums in search of the answer, but the answer was nowhere to be found. Finally I sat down with a jig and an old ball and started drilling and plugin. I finally fixed it. Hurry

if your thumb is soar all the time at the knuckle on the finger side, you may have the same problem I had. If that is in fact the case, please reply with a "yes". I may be the savior you've been searching for.

Let me know
