Drill Sheet Database version 5 now available
There are several big changes:
- Layouts can be entered by either Dual Angle or VLS systems
- Fields have been increased to capture, what I hope, is the vast majority of useful information
- Improved user interface
Still a great tool for keeping your own records, discussing layout ideas, and for Pro Shops to keep their customer's layouts.

To save hijacking a forum, etc.
I've started a Facebook page to help manage any modification requests and technical issues that anyone may have.

For those of you not on Facebook, you can still contact me through the PM on this forum.

Thanks for your patience
& I look forward to your enlightening queries
They have been most useful to me while developing this tool
& a planned update that I hope to roll out soon (-ish)

Original Posts Below
Following interest in the Drill Sheet Database that I posted the other month,
http://forum.bowlingchat.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=919
I decided to put it in it's own thread, and keep any "upgrades" in the same place.

The database was created for my local Pro Shop, and is written in Excel 2010 and VBA.
It holds Grip Measurements and also Dual Angle Layout with a graphical layout.

Edit: Original Zip File Corrupted. New Zip File Uploaded 26 Feb'14
Edit: Version 3-0-1 removed (15 Oct'15)
Version 5-4 has just finished testing and will be released shortly.
Existing Databases can be imported into this latest version

Macros need to be enabled within Excel.

Please send any feedback or suggestions for improvements.

Cheers

Kris
(Excel4Bowling)

Improvements Currently Requested
- Ovals for Thumb & Fingers
Latest version 5 includes fields for Oval Thumbs
- Ability to Sort Data Table
Latest version 5 allows Sorting of Table. Also Tables can be Exported, modified and Re-Imported

Apologies to the first 5 people who downloaded the file.
The new conversion from "track diameter" to tilt was doubling up.
Attached corrected file to the post above.

Serves me right posting it during my lunch break!

When I try to open up this zip file it says its corrupted. Can you look into this because I'm interested in your database.

Thanx.

Mmmm...
Not sure how that happened. Zip was corrupted on my USB stick too.
Will re-zip the original files and attach it to the original post.

Sorry

I think the boxes you are referring to are for the Span.

All of the boxes that you can enter information in can show Help Tips if you toggle the "?"
And there is further explanation if you click the "About..."
Just remember to have macros enabled so that the buttons work.

Anything else, just ask!

I opened up the Drill Sheet Link.xslm first. Then it worked. if you try to open the Drill Sheet database first then it wont work. this link is the control to the database.

Nice job on this! I did develop a proshop management software application with a spec library using a database back in the mid 80s. i should have continued to develop it, but, technologies kept changing over and over and it was difficult to have something that worked already have to be re-coded to the newer tech.

Once you've added a record, you can retrieve it by clicking on the Up & Down arrow/buttons.
These will allow you to move through all the records that are saved in the Data table.

If you have a long list this will be somewhat cumbersome, so
In the bottom left hand corner there are 3 fields that will allow you to filter the List of records retrieved, and you'll see the list beneath change. (This is just a list and not the Data table)

There is a slight glitch with the arrow buttons in that from a Clear form the first record retrieved by pressing the Up arrow/button will be the second record in the list. You just have to press Up & Then Down to retrieve the First record.

Hope that helps.

Kris

So you've entered a new record, and then clicked the "Add as New"
And then repeated the process for 5 customers.
(You can check that they've all been added to the Data Table, if you click on the View Data button)

You can then pull up the records from within the database using the arrow buttons (& filter).

But if you want to use the records for another purpose (such as listing out all the Dual Angle layouts for a particular bowler), then you can use the other spreadsheet in the zip file to query the Data Table (The button/macro within it creates the SQL query to the Database file and an example Pivot Table)

Does this help?

Rjf300 wrote:

The Compare button shows another Grip & Layout section alongside the Entry form.
This was included as I thought it might be useful to have an existing record on screen at the same time. Say for having a Bowler's previous Grip Measurements on screen, or if a customer has come and asked for a ball to drilled to react like someone elses (that you have the record for, of course).
There are also 5 sample layouts for each of High, Medium & Low Track players that you could also compare with.
You can cycle through the records for comparison the same way as the Entry form, as it has it's own set of arrow buttons.

There is also some "Help" available through the About button, and the "?" button brings up on screen help boxes for the entry cells. But as I created it, there may be some explanations missing or could be improved.

There is also 508 errors.

I think it's because the macro's have to be converted to work with openO.

The OpenOffice.org macros are written in OpenOffice.org BASIC, a macro language that uses the same programming logic as Microsoft Visual Basic. However, some elements differ, as for example the calls to software commands and object names. So you would have to rewrite the macros.

Unfortunately, No!
It also doesn't work with Excel for Mac - although not sure why as the 2011 version has VBA.
(As I only have a work Laptop, I cant experiment with Open Office or Mac)

However, I believe that it is possible to create a Stand Alone app from Excel - so in the future, once some additional development has been done on ovals, and anything else that might be useful, there may be a version that doesn't rely on having Excel on a Windows platform.

Excellent Work! I may have found a bug. See image below.

When I typed something else in the name field the sheet locks up. Putting "Sam Ple" back in fixes it. Otherwise you have to kill the Excel process.

Keep up he good work!

Thanks for that.
I've looked into it and it is a simple fix that'll include in the next version.

I thought I had to leave the filter fields unprotected (which allows you to type into them), in order for the Filters to work.
Turns out you don't.
The intended way that this part works, is that you click on the arrow and then use the standard excel menu that pops up to set your filter.

I could leave it that you can type into the cell, but then you must type an exact match.
But I foresee this could lend itself to a lot of emails coming my way!!

Thank very much and I hope you find this useful.

Kris

Yes please protect this cell. Your right about getting all sorts of support emails if left this way. Expecting the user to be able to type in an exact match is not going to work based on my own experience.

I was also wondering how many records you think this sheet will hold without affecting performance of the worksheet. I know it's going to depend on the speed of the system it's running on but just the same do you have any feel for how many customers this system would accommodate on a given PC.

The other thing I find is when using the pull-downs I'm usually able to scroll this list with my mouse-wheel. This doesn't work with this sheet. Is it the sheet or my excel settings?

I will admit that I haven't thrown loads of records into it yet, but I think the performance should be very little affected as the records are all values (with the exception of ID tag), so it is only ever undertaking calculations on the Entry record and the Compare Record.

I'll also look into the pull down issue.
I don't have a mouse to hand as on a laptop

Is there some way to "jump" to a specific record, or do I have to use the arrow buttons?
Example: File opens at ID 1, but I want to look at ID 25 out of 50.

Also, once I've entered the records, is there a way to re-organize them so that all the records from each customer are consecutive? Otherwise, as I add new records for a new ball, the records alternate from one customer to another, and back and so on. Or should I use a separate database for each customer?

But overall, I'm really liking this.
