The few times I've had problems with cracking, I think it was due to over mixing (really fussing over the color) and introducing a lot of air bubbles. I also fill the big thumbs in 2 parts.
How warm is your shop?
The air temperature seems to play a big role in how hot the mix gets and how long it takes to cure. In the winter the shop is 65F, and I need to increase the hardener a little bit (+10%). In the summer (temps more like 75F) I may decrease it a little, or the fill gets a little brittle. This is using 3:1 Pro Choice 6 hour from Innovative.
Other things that seem to improve results - sand hole for good mechanical bond. Blow out and vacuum. Clean area with acetone. I also wait 24 hours or more before touching it, although I might cut it back to within 1/32" and let that sit over night as well.

Depending on how deep the hole is, with that large a diameter you may have to plug it in three steps. -- JohnP

I use CS Hybrid to fill large holes to 3/4 depth, then top it off with Techline.
