How do YOU remove the factory polish on new balls?
Was having a conversation with a friend about this. And the question was, "how do most people remove the gloss polish" of new balls, because they want to try them not so glossy.
I hear some people call this "to crack the shine", or "break the shine" ? I'm not sure. Do you do it with a 4000 abralon or something similar? What technique exactly?

I start out just hitting the ball lightly with a grey scotch bright pad at the lanes. Throw the ball and add more pressure accordingly with subsequent scotch bright scuffing

I do the same thing. Hand pressure is best! More control and more direct pressure for a more accurate cut!MineralitePaul wrote: ↑January 31st, 2021, 10:40 pm I start out just hitting the ball lightly with a grey scotch bright pad at the lanes. To both of you : do you find one pass with the grey scotch bright is fine? What duration do you use? Until you feel it is off?

I use a worn 2000 pad, use more or less time depending on reaction I see after a couple shots

Until the coverstock appears as dull as I want it.
Only by hand, not with a spinner.

Re: How do YOU remove the factory polish on new balls?
Thanks. Are you aiming for some specific dullness or just to make it less shiny than factory ?

Its a feel thing. If it looks about where I want it, I stop.
More dull? Press harder.

Re: How do YOU remove the factory polish on new balls?
Thanks to all.
Since some of you mentioned using the grey scotch brite, what is your opinion on the test i did which showed that with a lot of pressure it showed a drop of only 100-200 grit (from a 5000 base) ? (unless you were using some other grey pad , i think they have 2 maybe three).
Also would you like to see some other test with some Scotch Brite pad? If yes, what about?

For all Brunswick factory balls I first resurface with 500grit abralon. (Factory surfaces have a huge unpredictable variance). Then hit with 1000grit, 2000grit or polish. That way I can always reproduce the surface to the exact same grit. For other factory balls I use the same method but default to 500+1000grit as starting point on most balls.

Re: How do YOU remove the factory polish on new balls?
Thanks Janne ! I was more interested though as to what each person does if he just wants to only remove the polish of a ball that he wants to make it slide just a bit less. Not change it to 3000 or less. For example you may have a ball that is polished, but you want it to be just a little bit duller but still shiny.

Re: How do YOU remove the factory polish on new balls?
One thing I used to do was a “sheen” finish.
I’d do it by doing the final polish of the ball, on my spinner with either a used grey scotchbrite or a white one.
It would give me a “broken in “ feel with the ball which maybe what you want?
