Dual Angle/Pin Placement Affecting Warranty

Post by Jthom757 »

Hello All,

My favorite layout is the 30x5x40. This layout causes me to bump the pins and void the warranty. It hasn’t really been an issue, but I noticed a ball I was going to sell has a tiny crack in the pin. Also, I noticed a brand new ball with a 35* VAL angle had a crack in the sliver of resin between the pin and finger hole and the resin has separated from the pin. So, I’ve learned if I am going to be OCD about the layout it’s probably a safer bet to go with the 5x40 location and bump the pin, but what are y’alls thoughts on how to approach this? I’m aware of DOT, but for now that’s not on enough equipment. I’d like to focus on solutions for balls with traditional pins. Shaving 15-20+ degrees off the VAL or adding an inch+ to the pin to pap seems crazy. Maybe I should just put the pin completely in the finger to stay closer to the intended layout.

Thank you
Justin

Adjust layouts to drill the pin out.

Thanks for the feedback. Putting the pin in the ring puts me at roughly 30x4.5x45 instead of 30x5x40. On an asym will the 1/2 inch shorter pin to pap offset the 5 degree increase on the VAL? Sorry if these questions seem silly. I’ve had tons of success since I started paying attention to the numbers so it’s hard for me to just throw it all out the window.

Thank you

You might get a little more flare, but subtle reaction difference.

Justin,

Just curious.
Are your specs still 4.75 over and 0?
When I mark out 30 x 5 x 40 with your specs, I don't get a pin that close to the finger holes.
And with my assumptions, making the P2P 5.25 as the only change should clear the warranty issue.
What am I missing?

Hi Glenn, I’m still going with 4.75 over and 0 up when mapping out my ball yes. My cut to cut on my ring to thumb is 4&5/8. I use IT thumb and vacu for fingers. Not sure how you’d measure without my span. Don’t most manufacturers require an inch between pin and fingers? Thanks for looking into this.

Justin,

My bad - I used my own span (yours is greater).
As far as I know, the 1-inch "rule" still applies.
Would a 30 x 5 x 30 clear it?
Shaving 10 degrees off the VAL might make the ball transition a little faster.

Hi Glenn, no worries. I talked to some friends and I got the impression that the 1 inch rule isn’t strictly enforced but there does need to be a decent amount of space between the pin and finger. A 30 degree Val with maybe a 5.25 p2p might be all that is needed but I guess I’ll just have to test it. I feel like pin in the ring is the best option to retain the most similar motion. I think whatever my goals are for the next ball I drill will dictate where I place the pin.
