Final shaving of plugs

Post by MineralitePaul »

Does anyone else use a utility knife razor blade held against the webbing of a Pro-sect as a super-fine tool to finsh save a plug. It works great in keeping that perfectly curvature. Started doing this with a regular quarter scale in the 80s (I sanded off a little of the bottom of the cross brace webbing to allow the proud plug to pass under it as I slid the scale and razor back and forth with the rest of the quarter scale acting as a curved surface planer. However, it works so much better with a pro-sect.

Another trick I like is to that a thin scraper razor (like the kind used to remove an inspection sticker from a car’s windshield), use two pair of needle-nose pliers to gradually bend a curvature in the blade by making little bends along the opposite end in the thicker softer steel ratainer strip. You can match the curvature of the ball when the blade is held against it at a 20x30-degree angle or so. This is great on a spinner too. One blade per ball as they don’t last.

Sorry, didn’t mean to double post. The submission hung for 10 minutes, I backed out and retried. Big dummy!

I use a 5" daisy cut 120 micron sanding disc on a CAB. Cuts the plug flush with the ball in about 10 seconds.

Cab blocks weren’t around when I came up with that shaving method. I bought some a few years ago and before I really got to use them and explore their potential, somebody stole the whole set from my shop. I guess it’s time to reinvest in another set because that sounds like the best method to finish off a plug. Thanks

Much appreciated. I Googled to find but only circular pads were found.

I think Walmart.com carries those sanding pads.

For those of us not very familiar with some terms and descriptions, photos or video would be better and self explanatory. Even cut in grips is something i am interested in (i am not a pro shop operator). Thanks!
