Router cup measurements

I made a router cup to cut plugs (Ryobi full size router) and although it works, it's a bit on the XXL size I think... looking like 6" diameter was overkill. Could someone please measure the height and O.D. of their cup ~1/8" is fine.

I stopped using a router years ago after the cutting blade dropped and destroyed a customers ball. I suggest you use a plug cutter blade that fits into your drill. A believe the diameter of the shield was about 4.5 or 5 inches, you will need to determine the height of the shield using geometry. Good luck

Are you aware you can buy a shield? See link below. You'll have to drill the hole for the bit, put it flat upside down on a scrap piece of wood and tape the area you'll be drilling into to avoid cracking. -- JohnP

I am just cutting plugs. I see they sell the cups for $85-$98. I have already printed myself one for $0.30 of plastic. It just seems a bit larger than I need. The 6" base gives it great stability on the ball but the CG of the Router is taller than I want... I can always thicken the cup and add a weight ring, but it seems better to get my dimensions closer to a commercially sold cup. I was using an old Tupperware bowl, so this is a huge upgrade!

Hey you! I found your designs before I even ordered my Prusa clone kit! I saw it was for a Dremel and did not even consider chopping it up for a full size Ryobi. Duh...
I LOVE the ruler - it was the first thing I printed in PETG, and I ordered some digital inside calipers to model my thumb.
Do you have the Turbo sleeve modeled already?

Hehe, nice to hear that someone noticed!

I have been kind of lazy lately to post some new stuff to the public. What do you mean by turbo sleeve? You can find the 3D-printable switchgrip slug that I made from thingiverse. I have all kind of sleeves modeled. I have even used several filament spools just trying to optimize my thumbhole - its a neverending job I guess. :lol:

Hardest part when trying to make a 3D-printable customized thumbhole is to create a truly flexible 3D-model that can be modified precisely!

I was asking about the Sleeve that goes into the ball, Female part of coupling... if you have a CAD file for that.
Also, what material do you print thumbs in? I have PLA and PETG. I am assuming you print them .003-.010" large I.D. and sand?
I love the homemeade equipment, probably my favorite part of bowling.

Well, most of the stuff that I made is just for testing different pitches or other experiments. I use normally .1mm layer and .4mm nozzle. 3-4 outer layers with 60% infill (honeycomb in simplify3d). This is usually enough to make the bottom part solid (no infill to the mechanism part). PLA is too weak for this mechanism in my opinion although some seems to have had success with it. With PETG the correct temperature is important because the material can become brittle. If I make a slug to constant use, I would probably print it solid or with more outer/top layers.

I have not modeled the outer slug because I believe it is a part that is not optimal for 3D-printing. It is quite cheap and very strong. If I would want to make the whole system using 3D-printing, I'd change the whole mechanism to be more suitable for 3D printed slugs. I actually started design new mechanism last year but It is not finished. The type of locking mechanism in the "Ultimate Thumb" type of interchangeable slug would be much more optimal for 3D-printed slugs for example.

I mainly use the normal drilled SG but whenever I think myself that I should need some modification to the pitch, I will print a slug and see what it makes. If it is ok, then I will drill new slug to the given pitches. This way I have been able to keep myself from altering the holes too often and focus more on bowling.

The most interesting project for me so far is that I have tried to develop a printed casting system where you print a mould that has custom thumb shape and then use the ball plugging material (or something other) to make a slug. This is kind of reversing the 3D-printing idea and result is a custom slug that is “normal” material. :geek:

I thought about latex... but... I may reconsider PLA with low fill and thin wall. It can be reshaped in hot water - I just did that with a fan duct hitting my X belt. If you want to share drawings, please send me a PM to a dropbox. I'd love to tinker with them... and promise not to ask you to fix them for me!
