Bowling Center (Landlord) selling my drilling for $10/ball

Post by snick »

Is there a circumstance in which a Bowling Center Landlord can legitimately set prices for their proshop tenant? In this case, they are selling White Dots to league members at cost + $10 and promising the members free drilling services, for which the house pays me $10 later.

This was arranged without consulting me first, so I feel stuck with a customer PR issue if I charge even a discounted rate for drilling the ball, and a problem with the house if I don't play ball with their plan.

Add a disclaimer, The free drilling is for Conventional Small, Medium or Large grip (like a house ball), NOT custom fit. Charge your normal rate less $10 for Custom fit.

As for the Landlord I am sure you could take some legal action citing false advertising. I think just the threat of legal action will get them to change their ways. Make sure there isn't anything in your lease contract that would allow them to do this. In the future I would also make sure that there was something in the lease contract that actually forbids them from doing this.

R U serious??
Well 2 can play that game then. Print him up some coupons for services totaling your monthly rent as full payment. He can do whatever he wants w/ them { I'd sure have 1 suggestion for him} WOW!

In what universe does a commercial landlord dictate YOUR business practices & prices on a whim???
AMAZING!

Sorry Eric, but I would NOT entertain anything in allowing this scenario to take place/continue in any way shape or form. That only encourages further BS 'promotions' on the Bowling center/landlord's part while he promotes/betters HIS business at the expense of yours/Proshop. Too Funny, NOT!

Thanks guys.

My first reaction is to print coupons for those leagues, clearly defining the deal they are actually going to get for the additional $50 they are paying into the league. (WD from the house and $10 toward their choice of drilling services). Of course, these coupons may contradict any promises made by the center during the initial league meeting or on the promotional flyers.

There is absolutely nothing in my contract with the center that permits the setting of prices, or running proshop promos without my concent.

The only problem with giving 10 free games with the purchase of a new ball is the proshop would be liable for the cost of those games.

This needs to be discussed with your center's landlord. First review your lease to be sure there's not language in it that allows him to set your pricing. If not, simply explain to him/her that you can't afford to waste your time drilling balls @ $10 each. Tell him what you will require the center to add to the $10 for him/her to be able to honor their commitment to the bowlers. But keep in mind that he/she may choose to not renew your lease when it comes up the next time. -- JohnP

Don't post the flyer to the public. Just make one and show the landlord so he gets the idea of what he did. If he goes for it all the better, but it is a polite way of making your point. If he wants extra money from you, then you have an opening to ask for extra money from him for what he did.

In my initial meeting with him about this, I suggested that he send his $10 promotional customers to another less busy proshop that might appreciate the extra work. (they own four centers in the area)
His response was that he wanted his customers to come to my shop and would raise the price on the promotion (thus, more money for me), but subsequently failed to do so for the Fall league promotion.

My next action was to give him a pricelist of all of my services and hours of operation, including special pricing for the juniors and "select-a-ball" leagues.
