Best case scenario the PSO has them go out on the lanes and throw a few ball to gather the info.

If it's a new bowler or one changing from a conventional grip, getting their first finger tip ball. While you could do that if you have/drill a ball that fits them, IMO there's not really a point.

Because while you might get a PAP location, Them being new they more then likely won't have stable PAP for a while.

Their release will be changing has they learn to use the fingertip ball, which will in turn affect their PAP location until it stabilizes.

And you can't use the PAP from a conventional grip, because it won't be the same as the one from a fingertip.

In this case many use basically a generic layout and PAP.

Here's some Generic PAP examples found on company drill sheets:

Hammer
Note: The drilling instructions are based on a bowlers positive axis point of 5" over and 1" up

Columbias Symmetric Drilling Instructions used this one-
PAP used is of a bowler with coordinates of 5 inches over and a 1/2 inch up.

Columbia Drilling Instructions
For a 3/4 roller (ball track just outside of the fingers and thumb), the PAP is approximately 5 inches over along the midline and 1/2 inches up along the vertical axis line

Storms key_drilling guide uses it in their example also
(EXAMPLE: If PAP is measured to be 5” right and 1” up, then measure down 1” along VAL and 5” left. You have now located the grip center.)

Ebonite
The following illustrations are based on a PAP of 5 inches across and 1 inch up from the center of span.

Track
All diagrams are based on a PAP of 5” over and .5” up.

Bowl-Tech_News_November_2007 from "Finding a bowlers PAP"
4-Now measure from your center of span straight right or left, then measure up or down and record how far from your center of span the PAP is. The drawing shows a "normal" right handed axis of 5" right and 1" up.

As for generic layouts, basically what you see on the company drill sheets are generic layouts.

For someone new you want a basic layout, "That won't get them into trouble".

Example One that use to be used a lot was what they called a "Label layout" (old school terminology),Symmetrical ball with basically the CG toward the center of the grip, pinup around the ring finger.

Now different PSO's will have their own ideas on this, so it's not set in stone.

The best approach I've found for ambitious newcomers, for whom the PAP is undiscoverable prior to drilling, is to fit them to a polyester spare ball first. PAP is not required to layout these balls.
Get the PAP from that ball (assuming it is stable and repeatable) and use it to drill subsequent reactive resin balls.

Well I understand that the question is if you are not a new bowler and you have many drilled bowling balls for the same pro shop how come they don't care about getting your information.

Well if someone has got many balls from the same shop, they may have the info on file for that person. So unless the customer says somethings changed or they want to update something, they might not regather the info.

But its like mechanics theres good ones and bad ones.

If they never had the info and just punch up balls, you dont keep going back.

Thats why when you go to the proshop, you ask questions about what they did or didnt do.

An if you dont like the answers, you find someone else.

Aside from being the right thing to do, caring about your customers is smart business.
Does any business really have too many customers?

Since there are thousands of readers, this is for any to whom the term PAP may be new or fuzzy.
