burying fingers
middle 1/4 left, ring 5/8 right drilled 3 3/4" down. they met @3 1/2" down. i thought we could go to 4 1/4"down. What am I doing wrong?

Your not doing anything wrong! It's OK if the pitches meet that far down. The 4 1/4" measurement locates the center of the ball. That's its' purpose. For inserts, that's:

1.218" total difference in pitches
That means the approximate pitches would be 3/8L by 3/4R to be perfectly parallel. The normal hand doesn't like that much separation in pitches.
