burying fingers

middle 1/4 left, ring 5/8 right drilled 3 3/4" down. they met @3 1/2" down. i thought we could go to 4 1/4"down. What am I doing wrong?

Your not doing anything wrong! It's OK if the pitches meet that far down. The 4 1/4" measurement locates the center of the ball. That's its' purpose. If you want true parallel pitches, so they don't meet, you take the radius of the MF and add the width of the bridge and add the radius of the RF together.

For inserts, that's:
.484"
.250"
.484"
1.218" total difference in pitches

That means the approximate pitches would be 3/8L by 3/4R to be perfectly parallel. The normal hand doesn't like that much separation in pitches.
