Brand new plug cutter

Post by Rafiki50289 »

Got my hands on a new plug cutter for cheap not sure who makes it it looks like the innovative one. It's very jumpy and breaks the plug and grabs the plug it actually took chunks out of the ball because it caught the plug. And it was zeroed out

Doesn't sound like a genuine Innovative cutter; those cut very quick and clean when they are new.

I've used it on a couple of different presses with different jigs and all the same results. My buddy told me it may just be to sharp Idk how that could be though.

for this reason I never bought a "plug cutter".
I shave the plug with a router, and I've been doing that for 30+ years ! ;)

I used to use a router until the cutting blade in the router dropped and shaved the top surface off the ball. The ball was destroyed and I had to replace the ball for the customer. I would never use a router again.

Had the same problem with a new innovative plug cutter recently ... maybe they had a bad production run. We use them historically & never had an issue. Have to cut real slow with light pressure or it will grab. Went back to old innovative plug cutter ... worn, but better than current alternative. Maybe "ballspinner" can address if there has been like feedback?

Here is the story of the Innovative plug cutter...

I designed this plug cutter several years ago. Plug cutters work best after they have been used for awhile and they dull up a little bit so I pre-dulled them straight from the factory so they would work perfectly right out of the box. They did work perfectly right out of the box - in most cases. The first problem was when people opened the box and they thought I sent them a used plug cutter. The second problem was if they were using it on a mill or drill press that had some wear. In those cases, I would send them a new cutter that wasn't pre-dulled and they were happy.

Most recently, I decided to not pre-dull them nearly as much as it seems to keep the most people satisfied and fewer calls in to the shop. There are many factors to consider...what type of ball plug they are using, what machine are they using and what condition it is in and trying to find the happy spot so we satisfy as many people as possible the first time around.

Just curious, but after the first few times customers called about getting what they thought was a used plug cutter.

Did you start including a note telling new purchasers it was "Pre-dulled" (for a reason) and not a used cutter.
"REMEMBER, it isn't how much the ball hooks, it's where."
