Ball spinner plan?

Ball spinner plan?
Hi,
I live on n Australia and need to get a ball spinner. Even the most basic ones available on the net for 200-300 work out to nearly $700 by the time they are freighted and taxed to Australia.
So, I want to build my own, rather than re-invent the wheel so to speak, I thought I would see who here has built their own and maybe get a copy of the plans or some photos of it please?
I am thinking of buying a laundry cabinet/ sink and putting a new electric motor underneath, using pulle/ belt to drive a short axle going up into the sink...
Have access to welder etc...

Re: Ball spinner plan?
I have not made one myself, but I did see one made by someone who was in a similar situation. The problems he had to consider included ensuring the motor was shielded from any water that could splash during the spinning process. He also had a problem getting a bowl that would hold the ball without scratching or damaging the ball in any way.
I know you said the cost of a spinner in Australia is very high. Have you considered a personal spinner for home use. A pro shop will require a spinner that will be used far more often than the average home user would subject a spinner to and the pro shop version is more expensive.

Are you using a drill? If so, you need to keep the center shaft above the equator of the ball. At the equator the ball won't spin. Below the equator it will spin the other direction but you'll probably push the ball out of the holder.

I follow the demo. Only my driller spins a bit faster. Also, I will move the sanding cup up and down within a very small distance (1 o'clock to 2 o'clock position). Sand 6 sides instead of 4 so that you don't need to move the cup too low (close to ball equator, 3 o'clock position) to cover a lot of surface , the spin will slow down too much.

Sanding too far down was the problem, will have another go, thanks Ads & Geggas for your reply.ads wrote:

I built my own using a bowl and guard from Innovative Bowling Products. I made a metal box to mount everything to. I used a pillow block bearing and a shaft I made to fit the bowl.

Re: Ball spinner plan?
check out youtube there are few homebrew spinners on there. (also google is your friend also)
A recent popular one is just taking a small cheap home drill press flipping the head over and mounting a bowl where the chuck is.
For the bowl you get a 8"-9" steel mixing bowl and punch a hole in the bottom to mount a shaft or to the spindle (need a couple of big dia. washers or similar to reinforce the bowl bottom). Put some rubber tubing around the edge to grip the ball.

heres plan for a different version of the press idea one;

Re: Ball spinner plan?
My first attempt at making a spinner, I used a bowl. It shook so much, the ball bounced out of it. It was only 1/16" off center. That is why I paid the money for the perfectly round, centered, and balanced bowl. It works great other than being a little fast. The speed sometimes causes the ball to find it's axis.

If Speed is a problem just get a cheap motor speed control and plug it into it. or just change a pulley size.gbabione wrote:My first attempt at making a spinner, I used a bowl. Re: Ball spinner plan?
I plan to change one of the pulleys. I just haven't gotten around to it. I had a 2-speed washing machine motor to start with a 3-position selector switch. It didn't last long so I replaced it with a 1/4 hp motor.

Thanks for the advice people, appreciate it...
I have an old drill press that I don't use anymore, so thinking I might try the upside down drill press idea!
Cheers!

I won't be able to post a picture for a couple weeks. We just sold our house and haven't found a new one, so it is in storage. I have to get to it anyway to use so I'll post one as soon as I can.

Here are some pictures of mine.
The top shows the bowl with splash guard. The side shows how I mounted the motor including belt tensioner and the splash guard using tabs and removable pins. The bottom shows the pillow block bearing with the shaft for the bowl and pulley and the shaft I made to lengthen the motor's shaft to be long enough for pulley alignment. The bowl and splash guard are from http://innovativebowling.com
