Natural Progression of Ball Purchases
Hey everyone,
I would have asked my coach this but he was slammed after our lesson today. I’m not in a huge hurry to buy another ball but I know it’s coming and I’d like to have some idea where to go.
Currently I have the 2Fast and it seems to be working for me. Please keep in mind I only have about 18 games under my belt. I did shoot a 221 today so yeah for me! But seriously what should I be looking at for a next ball? You may not be able to answer this question and that’s okay I’m just trying to get ahead.
Some info I do know:
I’m R handed
I bowl at about 15-18mph Still trying to find my speed.
Karl says I am speed dominant
My target is between the 2 & 3 arrow’s
I like the Roto and Storm balls looks the best.
I really like the Mutant Cell but I am getting the impression that the ball that may be best for a bowler may not be the one he actually likes cosmetically.
Thanks for any advice/help...
Michael

Re: Natural Progression of Ball Purchases
You should make your next purchase once you're comfortable with what you're doing at the moment (note: comfortable doesn't necessarily mean REALLY good. Just comfortable) and have an idea of what you think might help you most and what you would like to be doing on the lane. So, if you want to learn how play in the oil, you will want a ball that handles oil well, while if you would like to play up the boards more, you will want a ball that will allow you to do that. One thing you want to get for sure, is a polyester spare ball! In fact, that should probably be your VERY next purchase. After that, I would probably look at a 2Furious, as it is designed to complement the 2Fast and will probably fit under your 2Fast quite nicely.
I completely respect that you're trying about this whole process the right way. Most beginners (myself included) buy the next hook-in-a-box ball and hope it will help their game somehow.

Thanks Kelly. Can you shine some light on some polyester balls for me? Names and brands would be great so I can look them up and thanks for the help.

Re: Natural Progression of Ball Purchases
Just about EVERY ball company has Polyester. For Storm you're looking at the Ice Storm's or Team Storm balls. For Rotogrip, you're looking at the Golden Globe. Columbia has the White Dot's and Blue Dot. Brunswick has the TZone's. Morich has Polyester as well. Plenty of options

Re: Natural Progression of Ball Purchases
If you want straight:
Find plastic with a high hardness.
This will allow the ball to go straighter on higher friction conditions.
If you want dual usage (spares & dry lane):
Find a ball with a core in it. (urethane or Plastic)
There are older and some new ones out there as well.
They'll move a bit more than pancake weight blocks, but once you get comfortable shooting spares, its like 2nd nature.

Re: Natural Progression of Ball Purchases
Got a Black Ice from Storm for my grandson ....It is harder than some of the other Storm spare balls ....The Blue Dot was the hard ball by Columbia for years ..I have heard the rumor that is is just like the white dots now ......Sold several of them years ago....Take the lane out of play on the spare shots.....best wishes on your learning curve.....there is a lot of info to be gained from this forum...Steve S

Re: Natural Progression of Ball Purchases
Spare balls: Recently bought a Hammer Axe in 14lbs and I really like this ball a lot...it's got radar. I'm flirting with dropping down in weight. I don't know why exactly, but our group here has had terrible luck with the Tzones - we actually refer to them as anti-target zones. I've also had good luck with the AMF Extremes.
Re: Natural Progression of Ball Purchases
Well I ended up getting two balls today. I got the Storm Ice in black and then I also got the Mutant Cell. So know I have 3 balls in total and hopefully that will get me for a while.
Thanks for all the help fellas.

Re: Natural Progression of Ball Purchases
For me it's important to have a ball that I like from day one. I will never bowl well with a ball I hate. With the way that "GOOD" drillers can set up bowling balls these days, the Cell should be fine for you. Personally, I think I am going to get on of those new Morich balls everyone is talking about or something old like a Danger Zone(I always liked it). I have a Morich Response, a One, and a Macho Man spare ball all 15 lbs.

The brunswick Viz-a-ball is not showing any referenses on the coverstock.
Does it matter were I place the holes on this ball (2,5oz top) If I want the ball to be straightest as possible. (latest)
Sorry for using this thread for my qustion but I saw it related.

Cg should be marked by the serial # - I beleave they say to drill with 1/2 oz. neg. side for a R.H. bowler.
