What causes the Purples, even the new Brunswick Purples to get softer rather quickly?
I got a new Brunswick Purple in July of 2021 and have used it off and on since then.
It originally was very dull and gritty and measured 73 with my hand held durometer.
Today the ball is very smooth and even if I hit it with a fresh 1000 pad it still looks smooth.
I can scratch the surface with my fingernail and it now measures 68 with the same durometer.
What caused this?

From the manufacturing side, resins can be very unstable. Heat, cold, moisture, deterioration, surely there are others, have a significant impact on the longevity of resin products. All of those variables should be controlled during the manufacturing process, including the hardness of the finished product. We experience all of those factors when we use resin in the plugging process.
We're talking about the manufacturing of bowling balls though. What about the final testing phase?

Handheld durometers can have a large margin of error. Try to measure it 10 to 20 times and then get an average.
