I currently use a variety of storm/roto asym & sym balls--in 14 pounds--70 yrs old but fairly active. Current about 13 ball speed.
Wondering if I would lose much carry if I tried a 12 pound ball --looking for more ball speed. I realize arm swing height etc could give me more speed, but that sometimes causes balance issues. Some back and knee arthritis issues.

There are some very good offerings out there for 12 and 13 pound equipment.
I currently utilize 13# equipment with proper layouts for my release. Proper layouts are the key to being able to maximize the potential of lighter equipment.

I hear you with knee issues! Just getting back after knee replacement.
Dropping weight will always result in more deflection just because you have less weight hitting the same amount of weight. More speed will offset some of that.

Re: pin carry. 12 lb balls
Not "always" true.
On what I consider the perfect strike, the ball hitting the 1-3-5-then splitting the 8 and 9 pin. The deflection is exactly the same regardless of what pound ball you are rolling.
Like I said in my previous post I utilize 13# equipment. People can't believe I am rolling such a light ball. When I am rolling the ball well I will have 10 in the pit clearing the deck or send messengers to clear out 9 pins.
I also leave more 9 pins than I do 10 pins.
The key is getting the ball to roll.
I also did not gain speed with the lighter ball. I did gain rpm's. It is much easier to spin a lighter ball.
It is definitely easier for the strong, healthy un-injured bowler to throw a lighter ball too fast, not achieve roll resulting in too much deflection.

Eric's point above about splitting the pocket was illustrated on a video, years ago.
A ramp was set up down lane and various weight balls were rolled down the ramp from several angles to prove that ANGLE OF ENTRY was king. Phase of ball motion at impact another key!
A few months ago, a coach I know, rolled a high 700 using 13lb equipment.
Granted, the weight and velocity are very important.
A few resources regarding balance, ankle strength, grip strength, posture
Technique affects balance, so if and when you can, find a good instructor in your area.

As a variation of the The Farmers Walk, a marine buddy of mine taught me the Briefcase walk; carry weight on one side at a time, this loads one side and trains the other side for stability.
P.S. I'm older than you, so I can empathize.
I started gym workouts a few years ago. We are all different, thus age is a number, your lifestyle, circumstances, and DNA are all
Start conservatively, exercise patience.

On light weight balls such as a 12# ball I recommend my customers to stand further right and play the 2nd arrow and play the "Brooklyn Side". You will notice a better pin carry and easier pin leaves for spares.
