Need tips for playing on Boardwalk with my arsenal.

Post by JJakobsen »

We got a nation wide bowling league in Norway, like Sweden, and we got 3 matches in two different centers, all 3 matches are away matches, and all on 35' Kegel Boardwalk, which is a really bad pattern for me with my low tilt mid-high RPM and low-mid speed. But I am one of the better overall players in the club, and therefore, I am taken as one of 5 players for these 3 matches.

I can't tell you my drillings before I get down to work and check them tomorrow (if I remember, we got mice underneath our approaches, so I got some work to do  :? ), I got a Pro Sect and everything so I just need one throw to double check my PAP. Again, if I remember to actually measure my balls properly...

But, out of these balls, what is at all usable, and how would you adjust the surface on these balls to suit my specs?
- Storm Timeless
- Storm Marvel Pearl
- Brunswick Inferno
- 900 Global Shadow Ops
- (Dead) Storm Virtual Gravity Nano (considering shining it to 4000 and polish for spare ball use, anything I could utilize on Boardwalk?)
- Hammer Widow Spare (current spare ball, only ball I can roll down outside board 5 and hit the pocket with, but I need to be so insanely accurate, ball gives me nothing)

All are stock or close to stock covers, except the Inferno which has seen a lot of adjustments as it's my favorite, using the Timeless as a benchmark, being the weakest (even weaker than the urethane Shadow Ops, somehow).

I got 400-450rpm ish, 22-24km/h at sensors, VERY close to 0 tilt, 30-40 degrees rotation, can lower it to 10-20 if need be, but that means I need to think while playing, don't like that  My natural release is 30-40 degrees is my point!

TL;DR:
Out of these balls, what would you use with my specs, and what would you do with the surface of these balls to suit playing on short oil? :)

Define a smooth layout, just to be safe. What range is smooth?

By strength of cover, I'd say my balls go Marvel Pearl, Inferno/Timeless (not sure here, Inferno can MOVE, Timeless can too, but more on the fresh than when it's dragged down), Shadow Ops, Virtual Gravity Nano (due to deadness), Widow Spare, agree?

The pearls could react to violently depending on layout, so surface will be key. Low flare or smooth arc (typically pin under) is what I’d want.

Can't drill new,, I'm broke, and my pap is so high up, pin under doesn't exist for me  1 1/2 up on my pap last I checked it some while ago. But I know what you mean.

Also, when I get to drill new equipment, since my pap is so high up and I full roll (in the 0 tilt definition of full roller), how do I avoid thumb roll? I get slight thumb roll on some equipment that I have now, I can write down what layouts I currently have and what rolls over the thumb and let you know, maybe? Or is there a clear cut rule for this?

You're misunderstanding me. I'm a full roller only by tye definition that I got 0 tilt, but I don't have my track between my fingers, which is the other definition. In my eyes, full roller means you use the full circumference of the ball as track, which 0 tilt bowlers do. It's been discussed here before, in modern bowling it can be a useful term to describe 0 tilt players, that's all. What was called full roller having a full circumference track AND between the holes is all but gone, and in Norway, I've actually never seen it ever. Just my 2 cents on that discussion.

Stop trying to ram on the ball at the bottom.
Just roll the ball off your hand nicely and the problem will stop.
35' pattern is the perfect week to execute this.

Marvel Pearl: 85° × 3 1/4 × 75°
Inferno: 60° × 3 × 50°
Timeless: 55° × 4 1/2 × 45°

PAP has moved to 4 3/8 right, 2" up. So my layouts are not the same as when I drilled these 😅

And I'm not trying to do anything at all, I've played like I play for 12 years...

Tell me you dont grab it or jam on the ball at release after watching this video.

You ram on the ball pretty good and you're super late out of it.
You need to roll the ball off your hand smoother if you expect better ball reaction.
Your release is going left of your head, not good! It should be extended down the shot line to the breakpoint.

This shows your initial track with 0* of tilt, any less, as in Negative tilt it will hit the thumb hole. In the video shown in this thread I would swear you have negative tilt. You are coming to much across the back of the ball (right to left) and pulling back on the ball instead of releasing through the ball.
Don't try to hook the ball just roll it. Then you will be able to use your balls that hook more than the Timeless. The Timeless is your weakest Pin to PAP
The balls with 3 -3 1/2" are very strong Pin to PAP setups. Not so good for low/no/negative tilt bowlers.

By the way the balls and layouts you listed are all Symmetrical. Measure the Drilling angle to the thumb hole to get a more accurate idea of the layouts you are rolling. The actual layouts will be closer to ...

Marvel Pearl: 105° × 3 1/4 × 75°
Inferno: 90° × 3 × 50°
Timeless: 85° × 4 1/2 × 45°

I would sand the Timeless to 2000 grit for the Boardwalk pattern. Start the fresh playing 6-7 at the arrows out to 4 at the end of the pattern and try to speed up and keep the pocket in front of you. Go to a stronger reacting ball when the breakdown pushes you to the left while still trying to get the ball out to the 4 board.

Never said it was special. It is however unusual in non-two finger bowlers.

Thank you for the advice! I will try to avoid trying to change my game without any practice ahead of the matches, that's just playing with fire. The only practice I get is a few games on friday in the center we are playing the matches. Our center (my center, sadly) is closed due to rats, got a bad foundation with cracks in the concrete or something, so we can't practice at all here at home. Closest center is 1 hour away and takes premium per game compared to us.

Sadly, it might be the end of bowling for me :(

Ended up playing mostly with my spare ball, got too much reaction with the other two balls I brought, for the first two matches at the same center. In the 3rd match, which was at a different center, but the same pattern, I ended up playing with the Timeless inside the lane launching it out to board 5, except lane 1, which was so dry, I had to use the spare ball, so lay down on 30 on lanes 3, 4, 5, and 8 on lane 1. Managed to average 196 on the last match, which is above my average, the first two were below my average (played 165-175 ish), but it is a center I have always struggled in, I play there twice a year, and there is always something different you can't take into account, so I'm happy all in all! Hoping I get to actually continue playing bowling now, might have a new job within bowling, as an installer/service man. If not, this is probably my last post until I move to a place with a center! Thanks for all advice and help through the times!
