Think I may need something stronger

Post by BrokenArrow »

First of all, hello everyone. This is my first post. I am a very active bowler. I go atleast twice a week not including my league night. I am a 2 finger (no thumb) one handed righty. I have a pretty high rev rate (upper 4s to low 5s) and throw around 16-16.5 mph.

Right now I am having a ton of trouble with my ball burning up in the mid-lane and not making it back to the pocket. I have been buying stronger ball after stronger ball and they all tend to do the same thing. They force me to slow my speed to make it back to the pocket and then I usually end up going through the face. Right now I am throwing a Rip'd Solid, and it's still dying out on me somewhere in the mid-lane. If I move right and try to go straighter it over-hooks. I feel like if I had something that started just a little sooner, or maybe was a board or 2 more aggressive I would be right where I need to be. Any help is greatly appreciated. I am trying to stay away from pearl balls just because I'm already having trouble with too much length and not enough reaction.

You need weaker equipment to store energy for the backend. Tom Daugherty is a no thumber and he uses urethane and symmetricals like the Rebel. Stronger equipment and your revs are gonna move you left to hook it more than be able to play straighter.

So if I go to something weaker and symmetrical it will make it back to the pocket better then my Rip'd Solid is?

Yes, if you’re ball is burning up in the mid lane like you say. Asymmetrical respond to friction quicker so they can get jumpy with higher revs.

It sounds like you're playing too much up the lane on a house shot.
Open your angles up more. In the middle of the lane in the front of the lane and more outside of 10 on the backend.

I'm not talking about dry lanes. I'm talking about typical house shot. The really weird thing for me is as the lanes break down my ball tends to hook less. My Rip'd Solid works great for about a game and a half and them towards the end of the second game the same shot doesn't make it back. I assume it has something to do with carry down.

I'm looking for something that I can go semi-straight with and will have the ability to make it back to the pocket. I had no idea that a weaker or symmetrical ball would make it back more. Now that I think of it, it does seem to make sense that it would store more energy. I do have the ability to move way left and hook the entire lane but it just isn't as accurate as a more direct approach to the pocket. As we all know, straighter is greater.

Does anyone have a specific ball in mind that I should check out?

You need to learn ball motion (skid, hook and roll), ball works fine when there’s oil (first game and a half) and you loose reactIon as it dries up and starts to burn up. Pick your favorite brand and stay away from the solid/asymmetricals. I’d recommend the counter attacks from Radical

Usually I am drawn to Hammer products. I was always a fan of the black widows and just stuck with hammer. I was looking at "the sauce" but honestly the ball you recommended is roughly half the price. I'll def look into it. Thanks.

This is a laneplay issue, not an equipment issue.

So would you suggest that I move my target right and try to get out in the dryer part of the lane? My fear with that is over hooking

Move your feet into the oil more and move your target downlane right of 10.

That actually helps quite a bit. I think I am playing too straight and staying too much in the heavy oil and not really giving the ball a chance to hook. Next time I go I will try moving my target out alittle further right and see what happens. Thanks for the info.
