PAP marking and rules

Post by bradwhalen »

Once I have found my PAP is it within the rules to drill a hole on that spot and fill if with a different color?
Also would it be a good or bad idea even if it is within the rules?

It is perfectly legal.
In fact I have done this several times with balls I have owned over the years.

So you can put tape on it when you practice so you can see different tilt/rotation when you try new hand positions etc..

If you use a Permanent mark that's big enough , you can see your tilt, rotation etc. during league, tournament. Your not allowed to put tape on during competition.

Or if you use a small mark it lets you find your pap and put a piece of tape there for use during practice.

I use a 1/8 bit and just put a little dot on my pap and fill it in with a white tire crayon.

If you want to get fancy, use the name engraver and put a X or O on your pap and fill it.

So for league purposes it gives you feedback on how well your throwing it and during practice it can give instant feedback on different releases and such that someone might be working on. Sounds interesting and maybe worth doing.

It provides a visual feedback for me to judge my tilt/rotation and how the ball transitions.
I find it a very informative visual aide.

I have considered doing this, but I never got as far as actually asking my PSO to drill a hole and fill it. Maybe I should do that for the next time I buy a new arsenal...

Depending on just what your doing or want. It doesn't have to be a big hole(mark)

I take a small drill bit (1/16"-1/8") hold it with my fingers against the ball and give it a couple of twists it makes a small hole and then fill it in with a white tire crayon (like they use to fill in engraved names on balls)

See it on the right,-

I've always liked this idea, learned about it on a Don Johnson video. Two of his videos are available on the wiki.

If you only want to have a mark during practice sessions, consider carving a small X on the PAP where you can apply tape during practice ...
May all beings everywhere be happy and free,
and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life
contribute in some way to that happiness
and to that freedom for all.

Hadn't heard of it elsewhere, but had the idea myself a few months back, so i did it in one of my balls. It was the only legal way. Looks great if you make the circle a bit big and colored bright and in contrast with the local color. Mine is yellow.
