Need a Ball & Layout Recommendation(s)

Post by rrb6699 »

until last night I HATED my Idol. for some reason I didn't understand how to throw that ball. but, I got it locked in finally and after two bad games. threw 11 identical-carry strikes in a row with it.

I was determined to figure out what works for this ball, I found something. the ball likes to spin not roll.

here's my dilemma. I've changed to a speed dominant game. at least for my current arsenal. I feel validated for the fact I won a $2k first place tournament last week on a Badger 52' pattern using this technique. To give you an idea - crankers barely got a wrinkle and ran into trouble on the transition.

so, what I want is recommendations for a 16lb ball.. Im open to any manufacturerer not staffers pushing their balls. going for unbiased here.

here are my new specs:
PAP - 3-7/8 over, 1/2" up, RH
speed 17-19 downlane
I can tell you when I slow down I get matched speed and revs in the 16.5mph range on downlane speed.. you can figure revs from that. obviously, they go down at higher speed. I believe I have low tilt.

I'm looking for a Ball with a strong core and coverstock combo that I can throw a weak layout on heavy oil conditions. I know I may not get a reaction on 52' of oil, but, the ball motion itself (not movement on the lane - but the WAY it rolls). looking for a left-ward turning / "churning" off my hand! even if I try to come up the back of it more. I want to drill it under the new specs and suspect up to 3 oz of sideweight is going to be helpful for my game and will give me the ball roll I'm looking for. .

the Idol I have is drilled 75 x 5-1/2 x 35. no balance holes.

this new ball will be a heavy oil ball mostly. if you need any more info just ask.

if you want asymmetric i would try a sure lock, or code x. i have a sure lock and it hooks in any kind of heavy oil i have thrown it in. i have also tried it on drier lanes and it still rolls but it definitely burns up some. haven't thrown a code x but i might get one because it seems similar to the alpha crux.
If I had 6 hours to chop down a tree I would spend the first 4 sharpening the axe.

I have a SurLock and it's what I used to win the tournament with. it's drilled 45 x 4-1/2 x 35. I can tell you it does not hook much.

in the matchmaker I thought the ball I threw (sure lock also) was the strongest ball in the bunch, but, apparently, I didn't copy that ball's layout close enough. because my ball I purchased hooks 5 boards even on friction. I can hook it more if I slow up but my speed keeps the hook down and I'm trying to go stronger for more grab.

if you think the SurLock is the strongest cover out there, I can get another one.

what's your speed/specs. my speed is reading 17+ to 18+ downlane. spare avg over 19 but that's straight and with plastic.

I just saw that Kingpin Max and the Quantum Bias. I'm liking the looks of both those balls for what I'm doing.

here's what I'm thinking :
Kingpin Max: 65 x 3-3/8 x 30 - 3000grit
Bias: 80 x 5 x 30 - 500 / 1000 over

I'm going to experiment on older stuff I have with up to 3oz static weights also before I decide on static weights.
Tweenr-RH
300-(15) 290-(37) 280-(31)
Ser-1075-4gm, 867-3gm
speed dominant
Tilt: low°, Ax Rot: ~....°, PAP: 3 7/8 over- 1/2 up; Speed: 17.5mph Avg downlane
Several Wins/Top 5 Finishes-scr/hdcp tournaments.

I’m speed dominate too, 16 to 20 off the hand depending on much or little I swing it. 275- 300ish rev, 12 tilt and 40-50 rotation. I’m more of a roller and not give away the pocket.

Those balls choices seem like a good place to start and adjust surface as needed.

I did a Ball demo for DV8, Brunswick, & Radical August 2018. Here are reviews that were most interesting to me. I reviewed all the balls in the demo but, you'd have to subscribe to my YouTube channel to see them all.
here are the Bias, Creed Rebellion and Beyond Ridiculous Pearl. Note: I used Quantum Bias as the base shot for the other balls to compare what happens. then make an adjustment to strike with each ball.

Quantum Bias 15lb - first ever shot w/ball

Quantum Bias 15lb
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

DV8 Creed Rebellion on Bias Line
(strongest ball in the demo)
maybe the strongest ball I've ever thrown!
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

DV8 Creed Rebellion 3bd left adjustment
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Beyond Ridiculous - weakest demo cover
(on Bias Line) does not mean a bad ball. I find it a good fit above urethane thru heads that reads better.
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Beyond Ridiculous - 5/3 bd adjustment right off Bias line
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

rr,

Settle that shoulder down and just roll the ball off your hand.
Yanking on the ball is causing you to squeeze and just add speed and drop rev rate.

thanks! i'll work on that.
The approaches very sticky that day. I like to slide so, planting is a B game for me.

I've been bowling awesome lately despite some flaws you point out. I've been top two or 3 in almost every event. hell, even won an event on 52' badger using speed.
Shot a couple 300s in tournaments as well and many near 300s but I guess 300 & those aren't a big deal anymore. lol.

I'm always working on improving. Appreciate any and all observations!

bowl well.
