So basically the balls in your bag boil down to this:

*A hard, non-porous ball, for dry conditions
*A more porous ball, for oily conditions
*A plastic ball with no core, for straight shots

Thus the reason why most bowlers who are regulars, and pretty serious about the sport, will have three balls at a minimum. Do I have that right?

Arsenals tend to be more nuanced than that, but that is a good starting point.

Thanks! So I currently have my eye on buying a matte finish, reactive ball. Top picks????????

Rotogrip Showoff is a good midrange ball with a top shelf cover. I would pair it with the Storm Matchup Hybrid. Both balls with benchmark layouts.

For dry lanes and spares, I would recommend a Storm Pitch Black (low-flare urethane).

Thanks. Would like suggestions of a matte finish, solid color ball. As a leftover 60’s hippie, I find that the swirling colors on many balls, gives me flashbacks (lol)!!

Any ball can have a matte finish. You can adjust the surface with abrasive pads, ask your pro shop.

I don’t think that that’s true of “plastic” balls, is it?

Why do you think that is not true?

What about a plastic ball makes you think you can't sand it?

The Roto Grip Idol is similar to the Show Off and it's a solid color.

The potential hooking of a plastic ball is less - but if you sand it to 300, it's GOING to hook. If it's on a dry dry lane, it will hook. Heck, most of us actually use some of that hook power of a plastic - I throw my white dot a tad to the right, it grabs the dry at the edge of the lane and straightens to hit the 10. Gives me a touch of leeway. Not much. . .
