Would this be a good idea?

Post by SRB442 »

Hi, I am looking for some ideas for a possible new ball. I bowl on a THS that has had a shift of bowling on it before us. What happens is I start with a polished ball Winner pearl or No Rules pearl which works well and am able to move in as the track burns up and still able to hit the pocket but my carry decreases. There is still oil in the middle and am thing of using something solid with a bit of surface on it and play further in. I thinking of a strong asymmetrical like a Halo or a symmetrical like a winner solid. Just looking for a better look later in the night. Whats everybody think? Thanks Steve

Yes, I believe it does make a difference.
You are running out of carry when you get deep. I believe this is because you are rolling long pin to PAP which burns off tilt too quickly and by the time it hits the pocket there is no tilt left. Using a shorter pin to PAP on Asyms will retain that tilt giving you better carry percentage. It also creates a longer smoother hook zone also described as continuation. You could even go as low as 3" pin to PAP especially if you are going to keep a dull surface on the Halo.

Thank You for the information. When I asked about the pin I meant the pin distance that is on the box I typically get 3.5=4 pin would I start with the same pin or get a shorter pin distance. I thought that being a dull ball it would run out of energy sooner but I am still learning all this stuff. Steve

Still thinking about this. Stopped at my Pro shop and talked about it a bit. This shop has been drilling my stuff for over 30 years and the same person has been drilling my stuff for over 20. From knowing my game he thinks the Halo might be too strong of a cover for me. If I wanted something stronger to get the Halo Pearl which is a little stronger than my No Rules Pearl. The layout hasn't been discussed much yet.

It just seems lately in both leagues I bowl in (different houses) that when I start I need something stronger and by the middle of the second game I need something weaker. This past week I ended up moving in 8 boards to find a little oil.

Would the Halo Pearl work with that same layout? Your input is greatly appreciated. Steve

If you want to sand it 2000 grit dull like the Halo solid.

Just a update on this thread. Had a Halo Pearl drilled 70x4x40. So far I like it it. In league last night had 25 strikes over 3 games. Still had 7 ten pins but heading in the right direction. I did find out that I need to really get through the shot hard for the best pin carry too. Thanks you for your advise and help. Steve
