A few questions regarding elbow bend

Post by jb8 »

1. Why do most pros bend their elbows right before release? wouldn't that disrupt their swing, causing a bunch of problems?

2. How can I incorporate that concept into my game?

3. An old vid of mines showed that as my swing goes into the release, my elbow looks like it bends backwards. Like if my bicep is at a 45 degree angle, my forearm would seem like it's in a 50 degree angle. Is there any reason why I saw such a thing in my video. Could it be a lack of elbow bend foward?

1. Why do most pros bend their elbows right before release?

I don't see this as a predominant characteristic of most pros. Tommy Jones and
Jason Couch both apply this technique; but they straighten the arm during release.
Using the bent elbow technique can place the hand further under the ball.
Watch the open play no thumb bowlers at your center. (a lot of muscling involved)
T.J and Jason are high level athletes that utilize this technique.
Would love to go back in time and check out their fit in their developmental years.
The majority of high level two handed style bowlers do this as a way to help increase
the length of the back swing when coupled with fast feet = ball speed.

2. How can I incorporate that concept into my game? First I must ask why?

3. An old vid of mines showed that as my swing goes into the release, my elbow looks
like it bends backwards.

Need more descriptive info to answer properly -but it sounds as though you are
using too much grip pressure and possibly pulling the ball down from the top.

Need to have your grip check by a qualified pro shop. Someone on here can provide
you with a name in your area.

There are athletes in many sports that perform with non-standard technique at high
levels - but they are the exception not the rule!
