Please Analyze my Form

Post by Ddunc23 »

Hello,

I feel like I am going in circles when it comes to improving my form and I am looking for some professional guidance. First of all, I feel like I am carrying the ball and have tried to relax my muscles during the swing but It does not seem to be working. I also feel like my wrist always breaks back at release no matter what. Could I have a fit issue?

Also I am 6ft 4in making me a pretty tall bowler.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

First draft.

I will start the ball rolling. Caveat, I am not an experienced instructor.
So why am I answering?
Back in the early 2000's I certified as Bronze then Silver coach via USBC.
Note that USBC when I certified, did not teach people how to instruct or groom instructors.
There is a huge difference between knowing a bit of theory and knowing when and where to apply it and in what measure. It takes some skills I lack.
Analogy, memorizing formulas does not make one a mathematician :D
There are several practicing, proven instructors that frequent the forum and I would place a higher value on their
advice. Keep in mind that the Pandemic has most likely altered their schedule and priorities. Until they are available to help.
Here's a few tidbits -

You mentioned the fit. Its a good thing to have your fit (grip) checked periodically.
The frequency depends on various factors.
I will assume you add and remove tape to adjust marginal fit issues and also to maintain the feel of the tape as it gets dirty and its texture becomes ineffective.

I will address only 2 things here.

1) Hand position throughout the swing
2) Foot work.

Regarding practicing new moves.
Consider phases: 1) No ball, 2) A light weighted prop, 3) With the ball

Why articles an videos?
1) The instructions are from elite coaches and the methods are proven and well described and illustrated.

Here is two article that discusses aspects of the bowlers release.
Note the importance of firming up and the position of the index finger.
The support from the index finger helps the wrist immensely!

Here is a video keying on thumb position and forearm orientation.

You are getting to the outside of the ball too soon.
Read Ron's article. I call your attention to his points regarding the index finger.

Foot work

Note that there are numerous drills. Some drills can be done away from the bowling center.
