See what you think jim, I did get good ball motion from those shots. not enough tilt and elbow not inward enough on 1 step drill. (ball too far away from feet)

9/28 practiced the 1 step drill again today, seems it is alot easier to do O'keefes version when the left foot is in front of the right foot slightly and just slide it forward. Think I am rotating the ball too much trying to spin it instead of putting it out in the lane. Forearm needs to be straight after release and not twisted inward

See what you think jim, I did get good ball motion from those shots. These are DRILLS, I don't care nor should you about ball motion. not enough tilt and elbow not inward enough on 1 step drill. (ball too far away from feet) Perform the drills and let ME evaluate!

9/28 practiced the 1 step drill again today, seems it is alot easier to do O'keefes (then maybe you should ask Shannon for HELP!) version when the left foot is in front of the right foot slightly and just slide it forward. Think I am rotating the ball too much trying to spin it instead of putting it out in the lane. Forearm needs to be straight after release and not twisted inward (again just do the drills as instructed)

Thanks for the videos.

Overall, the drills are pretty good, since you executed them without supervision.

Foul Line Drill Back & Slide Views
1) Your starting position should be on fifteenth board. In the video looks like you’re on the twenty-second board. I use the inside of the slide foot as a reference point, not the big toe, etc. See the slide titled: ” Ball / Ankle”.

2) In that same slide the center of the ball is 5 boards from your slide foot on the down swing. This should answer one of your questions as to whether it’s possible for plus size athletes to get the ball close to the ankle. It’s about proper technique not size!

3) In the slide “Hand Position” your starting hand position(A) in the foul Line drill shows a lot of wrist cock. I prefer to see the hand in position “B” for this drill. I am a believer that the weight of the ball should be centered on the hand (weight on middle two fingers as in B).

4) Let’s now look at the slide” Trail Leg Foot Position”. The trail leg should supinate, in other words the ankle should roll over and rest on the outside of the slide foot sole. Your move allows too much weight to rest on the trailing leg, look at Verity’s foot position in B for reference.

5) Another indicator that too much weight is on the trail leg is the angle of your slide leg. It is leaning left (body weight left). Verity’s leg is much more vertical, weight on the slide foot.

6) Slide 1 in the Foul Line Side View your starting hand position is correct. However, in slide 2 you immediately cock your wrist. DO NOT DO THIS, MAINTAIN THE STARTING HAND POSITION (slide #1) THROUGHOUT THE DRILL!

7) To perform this drill properly the swing should ONLY travel 12 inches forward and backward. Your swing in this drill is too long. Print-out the slide “Correct execution of the foul line drill”.

Swing & Slide Drill Side & Back views

1) You are preforming this drill too close to the foul line. Move back two feet.

2) The left arm should be extended forward with the thumb pointing downward.

3) The left foot should be up on it’s toe, goal being to keep as much weight as possible on the right foot at address.

4) You do not use your upper body at all in this drill. Look at the slide “Upper Body”.

5) You can see as in 2 & 3 as his swing starts down and back his upper body tilts forward.

6) In Slide “Back Angle”, his ball position is above his shoulder without any wrist cup. Your swing is lower and your wrist is cupped. The angle between your and body is basically the same as his.
If you didn’t have the cupped wrist your swing would be higher! Adding more back angle would position your swing above the shoulder!!!

7) In slide 5, his slide foot moves forward much faster than the swing falls down. This is critical in creating enough bowling ball trailing time in order be in a leveraged position at release. Your slide foot as only moved about a foot, but your swing fell three feet!!!

8) Because your slide was so short you have no knee bend in slide 6. He releases his ball into the lane you throw yours out onto the lane.

Suggestions:
1) Read this post several times
2) Purchase a notebook and take to the lanes.
3) Make notes of my commentary
4) Print out reference material to take to the lanes.
5) These drills can alos be practiced at home
6) Practice the suggested corrections to the two drills.
7) When you feel you are ready post new video of these two drills.

Patience, patience…..these are drills there are no targets to HIT!

Keep our eyes on the gripping hand when performing the foul line drill....No targets.

I created a post in the Coaching Discussion Forum to address any questions you may have about this post.
Keep the questions SHORT and to the point!

Just a thought -
Until this becomes a habit, you might try wearing a baseball cap with the brim at your eyebrows.
