Impetus for this topic:

Problem: Ball returns on approaches.
I used to use a railroad track analogy, which of course goes off the tracks when the ball return becomes a factor. Starting point is the train station. What happens when that station should be on the other side of the ball return?

Some players stand in front of ball return and using Kegel's modified 3 step is a method to cope.

Jim, what if any addendum would you add to your diagrams in the link above
(topic: Misaligned too far left) when a bowler chooses to play extreme angles?
How do you teach this?

Thanks.

The ETT terminology came from ETBF's presentation at the World Bowling Coach Conference in 2014 at the ITRC in Texas.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQfSHD_Gtrg

In the video, they don't execute any shots standing in front of the ball return. You can see that the young man's feet are positioned ahead of the ball return.

As to your question, how do I teach this:
At the address position, I look at Body and Swing Alignment to the line of play. (same principle as ETT).

Once a student gets to the train station, it becomes time to change trains (train of thought).

I am an advocate of the three step approach in front of the ball return.
The three step system maintains proper Body and Swing Alignment to the line of play.

There are those who choose to walk around the ball return, this system requires compensation for the body and swing to return to the line of play.

Compensations are sometimes hard to repeat and adversely affect our repeatability.

To quote Ruben Ghiragossian " from stance to release, bowling and its coaching are creative and artistic forms. Beyond the foul line it is a science".

Jim, thanks for your informative and clever note and the Ruben quote.

I'd first seen the ETT acronym in an article in Bowlers Journal with Ondar Gurkan.
The article appears as an attachment in a few posts here.

Just for fun, years ago I experimented with the full approach, step in front of the ball return, realign, tango. Managed not to kill myself, gained more appreciation for the athletic ability of those who could do it well.

Bowling in the future will not have ball returns.
The balls will be beamed back as in Star Trek. The process will clean the ball and return it to the bowler ...

Thanks as always for sharing.
